Natural Disasters and Anthropogenic disasters by Katie

Hi guys! My concept map this week focuses more on what a natural disaster and anthropogenic disaster is, and the response that is needed in order to prevent and recover from them, specifically humanitarian aid which essentially can decrease the global burden of disease.

The accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant triggered a massive evacuation from affected areas. The study found that people increased their evacuation distance from the nuclear power plant and reached their furthest evacuation destinations shortly after the accident. The fear of radiation exposure only has an impact on selecting evacuation locations briefly after the accident. The paper suggests that the decision regarding evacuation destinations is strongly driven by human networks and recommendations of local governments and acquaintances and is influenced less by job-related matters, safety from radiation exposure, accommodation availability, and convenient access to social amenities.

In 2011, The Tohoku region, Northeast Japan, was hit by a gigantic earthquake which occurred in the Pacific close to Tohoku, and subsequently by a giant tsunami. The earthquake’s magnitude was 9.0, the strongest ever recorded in Japan. The tsunami was also historical as its run-up height reached over 39 m. As of early May, 2011, over 24 thousand people were reported as dead or missing

This picture here shows the proximate damage of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. The accident was rated level 7 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale, due to high radioactive releases over days 4 to 6. Showing that manmade disasters contribute to natural disasters and thus increasing the global burden of health. More than 18000 died due to the tsunami and earthquake, but the effects of the explosion are still affecting the local population.

This image here shows that the UAE did an act of humanitarian aid to Iran when a flood occurred there. And like the disasters that occured in Japan and the Nuclear displacement in Fukushima, the same principles can be applied where countries work together and aid one another when disaster strikes. Especially, with the technological advances we have presently, by doing so the global burden of disease can be decreased and prevented.
