The guidance approach “teaches children democratic life skills. The skills include individuals needs to function as citizens/healthy individuals” (Gartell 2018).

The Democratic Life Skills Include:

I see oneself as a worthy individuals and capable member of the group
Express strong emotions in no hurting ways
Solve problems creativity and in cooperation with others
Accept unique human qualities in others
Make decisions ethically and intelligently

Examples of Instructional Activities for the Classroom that Use the Guidance Approach to meet the needs of Early Education Students:

Choice Boards:
Implementing choice boards during center time will allow students to identify what centers are available and also allows them to select the center of their choice. This activity also allows students to move freely within the classroom and introduce students to decision making.
Morning Meetings:
During morning meetings, include created visuals to introduce feelings/emotions that will help students identify their feelings. Including a “Hello” song will also promote student engagement and students will learn new methods of saying “Hello” by either a hug, high five, wave, or fist pump.

An Activity Families can Implement at Home Using the Guidance Approach to Support Home/School Connection Related to Technology Usage:

Family Projects:

Every few months, a family project will be sent home to promote family engagement and to encourage positive guidance. For example, creating an “All About Me” poster of a student that includes their favorite foods, colors, areas of interest and etc. Once families have completed the assignment then will then capture of picture and upload a picture of the class on ClassDojo to share with other families/students.
