Explanation
There are very many things going on in this time period. The main subject of all the pain and suffering would be World War 2. The Nazi party is continuously winning the battles in Britain and many places are starting to panic. Some are also beginning to lose hope for the Allied forces.
Evidence
The biggest piece of evidence here is the date. the date is June 4, 1940. This shows that this speech was given in the middle of the second world war.

Explanation:

The ethos of the writer is established plainly through his character and who he was before this speech was given. He was looked at as a true leader by the people of Britain. He also was helping Britain get through World War 2.

The ethos is also established through him speaking about the same goals of everyone of Britain. He spoke of duties that the Army and the Navy had to fought for, a duty with the Allied forces.

Evidence:

"We shall not be content with a defensive war. We have our duty to our Ally."

Explanation:

Winston establishes a tone of hopefulness midway through the speech. He mentions the losses of the families and the Army. However, when speaking of this he also states that not all hope was lost. He stressed to them that the aid of the fallen would be remembered and it would be for something.

At the end of the speech, he establishes a tone of inspiration. He is calling all those around him to action. He is telling them that they will fight and not back down.

Evidence:

"His son has been killed, and many in the House have felt the pangs of affliction in the sharpest form. But I will say this about the missing: We have had a large number of wounded come home safely to this country, but I would say about the missing that there may be very many reported missing who will come back home, some day, in one way or another. In the confusion of this fight it is inevitable that many have been left in positions where honor required no further resistance from them."

" we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."

Explanation:

His credibility is established through his character and his achievements in life. He is a very well known leader in Britain and he is trying his best to get them through it. The main thing the country needs is a flame that needs to start to get them to keep fighting.

Evidence:

He acknowledges the losses, but further explains that they have a duty to serve to the allies.

He calls his people to action to fight and serve for their country.
