Pertussis presents itself in 3 stages. The Catarrhal stage includes symptoms such as increase in the inflammation of mucous membranes of the head and mouth with increased mucous flow, cough, runny nose, and low grade fever. The Paroxysmal stage is characterized by symptoms such as convulsions, spasms, violent coughing (whooping cough) that makes it hard to breathe, cyanosis, and vomiting. The Convalescent stage's symptoms are when the whooping cough reduces or recedes.

The DTaP was licensed and approved in 1949. Before the development and introduction of DTaP, pertussis was one of the most common childhood diseases and a major cause of childhood mortality in the United States in the 20th century. More than 200,000 cases of pertussis were reported annually in the U.S. before the Pertussis vaccine became available, and around 9000 deaths resulted from the infection. Since the introduction and widespread use of the Pertussis vaccine, incidence rates have decreased by more than 80%. Currently, about 10,000 to 40,000 cases are reported each year and unfortunately up to 20 deaths occur.

The mode of transmission for Pertussis is through airborne droplets or by direct contact with respiratory secretions from infected people. People infected with pertussis spread the disease to another person by coughing or sneezing or spending a lot of time near another person where they share breathing space. Many babies who get pertussis are infected by older siblings, parents, or caregivers who might not even know they have the disease.
