The rapid growth of warehouses in the Inland Empire (IE) raises health, environmental, and justice concerns. With over a billion square feet of warehouse space, CO2 emissions are increasing, and neighborhoods—especially Latine and low-income communities—are facing higher health risks like asthma and cancer. Warehouses near schools mean more children miss school due to health issues. While warehouses may benefit the wealthy and local governments, they worsen poverty and exploit poor communities, particularly Latine ones. If this expansion continues unchecked, vulnerable communities could be displaced, and traffic and pollution will worsen.

The intersection of environmental and labor issues in the IE is particularly poignant for me as a member of the Latine community, most affected by warehouse expansion. Many community members work in these facilities but lack education about their work environment. With only 23% of the population in the IE holding a bachelor’s degree or higher, there is a need for environmental training in these warehouses. Educating workers about the consequences of their employment can empower them to reconsider their choices. This issue resonates with me, as my mother works in a warehouse, enduring long hours, low pay, and health risks from poor air quality. Addressing these issues is vital for our community’s well-being and fair labor practices.
