Remember that the job market is very dynamic due to rapid technological advancements. Companies seek versatile candidates with an open mindset, analytical skills, critical thinking, and knowledge of AI, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning to develop digital products.

Carefully check the profiles of the DH programmes (e.g., some universities may offer generalistic DH programmes at the BA level, and more specialised DH programs at the MA level). In some countries, DH programmes are more specialised in computational competences than others

Design flexible and versatile DH programs so that the student can choose and build a particular profile.

Keep in mind the role of the university to provide holistic education

Include career counselling & mentorship sessions to raise awareness about the rapidly changing job market and potential career paths suitable for DH graduates.

• Also, make the students aware of job profiles threatened by AI, e.g. digital marketing and content marketing.

Set up internship programs in collaboration with companies and public organisations

Teach students how to promote their skills and show the added value of their studies, e.g. highlight the multidisciplinary angle, create a portfolio with their best projects, use social media to look for a job

Keep tracking the alumni's professional trajectories to upskill the DH curricula and advise new students on potential career paths.

Invite DH alumni as guest lecturers in your programme to share their job search experience, teach a new skills, or mentor a student aiming for a similar career path.

Organise joint DH research projects and/or hackathons with representatives from the non-academic sectors (tech companies, research infrastructures, GLAM) to teach the students how to apply their skills to solve real-life problems

Invite former alumni who have become entrepreneurs to give a guest lecture and share their experience of setting up a company

DH study topics have different names -> harmonisation of terminology is needed across universities to allow easier comparison between the programs in terms of trends and taught topics.

Put more emphasis on practical experience and hands-on learning as companies value versatile graduate profiles (e.g. knowledge of web design, fundamentals of AI, programming languages, project management, and data management)

Companies are not looking for engineers per se but for someone with a knowledge and understanding of AI

Find computer science teachers who know how to teach programming to students with a humanities background

To motivate the students to learn programming skills, show them the types of problems in DH research which they can solve using those skills

Teach the students the limitations of technology

Support women who want to learn and teach programming

When seeking to integrate AI into your products, keep in mind that in addition to NLP engineers and data scientists, you may also need a profile with digital humanities skills:

• DH graduates have a multidisciplinary background and know how to use powerful tools and methods to interpret data and creatively solve societal challenges.

Hire interns from DH programmes

Engage in joint research projects to solve societal challenges

Organise joint hackathons to teach students how to solve real-life problems

Create a portfolio with your best DH projects and promote it via social media profile or personal website to raise the interest of potential employers

Be proactive and get in contact with potential employers via job search platforms, e.g. LinkedIn

During interviews, emphasize your multidisciplinary background and the wide range of skills acquired during your study. Highlight what you can bring new to the job compared to an NLP engineer or data scientist

When entering the job market, keep in mind that:

• There is a wide range of job profiles which could use your DH skills and expertise; see the above examples.

• There are also interesting job positions in the world of digital research infrastructures, e.g. DARIAH, CLARIN, EHRI, and networks, e.g. EUROPEANA

• Besides being an employee, you also have the option to work as a freelancer or an entrepreneur, especially in those cities with great cultural interests and which have an attractive tourism model.

Focus on your own strengths/expertise and build digital skills on top of that (e.g. learn programming languages, the fundamentals of AI & how to use basic NLP tools and methods keeping in mind the limitations of technology)

Try not to become a computer engineer but a mediator between humanists and computer scientists

Attend all classes, even those that may not seem immediately useful, as those skills may be valuable later in your career (e.g. legal and ethical issues in DH).

Participate in research-based projects and hackathons in order to apply what you learned

Ask for feedback from teachers and colleagues to be able to improve

Find a mentor from the former DH alumni

Gain practical work experience through work placements or volunteering opportunities keeping in mind that there are also opportunities in the technical and business sectors

Adopt an open mindset and continuously seek to improve your skills and learn new ones

Stay in close contact with your university to raise awareness about emerging skills and job profiles, participate in joint research-based projects, mentor a DH student, give a guest lecture on new emerging skills
