When checking pH level of site soil, soil samples were collected in a zig-zag pattern throughout site to get a representative sample. Small amount of this was then sieved, and diluted in water, and the pH measured using a pH meter. Ginkgo biloba is tolerant of acidic and alkaline soils, and so the soil pH of 6.3 at the site meant that no pH adjustment was required before planting.
When digging the hole with a spade and planting the tree, any rocks or large stones found were removed by hand. Prior to placing the tree in the hole, the bottom of the hole was aerated by placing smaller holes with a fork, allowing for better drainage. 
The bottom of the planting hole was layered with grit, and fresh compost and TopMix fertiliser were added. The roots of the tree were teased out slightly with a fork before planting. After the tree was planted, it was watered with a watering can and mulched with woodchip.
