Why is all of this information necessary? If there were no plants, we wouldn't have oxygen, which is a given. Looking deeper, without having this knowledge, we wouldn't know that all plants are somehow connected. They make up our neighborhoods, cities, countries, and the world. Not only are plants beautiful, they are necessary for our ecosystem. The roots that stay in the ground can regrow or help support the preexisting plant which in turn, provides an ecosystem for many species including humans. So why is this important, without this knowledge we wouldn't have any explanation on how to keep the world how the world should be or even survival.

Why is this important? If scientists didn't look into the process and explanation of growth, we wouldn't know how to grow vegetables or plants. For instance, on the road that I drive to get to my house, the grass all around is looking dead and dull. By now, understanding how and why, I can determine that the grass needs more nutrients and possibly new soil. If we didn't know this information, I believe our world would look a lot more different than today. Granted, I think we need to improve more, but it is still beautiful.

Plants in any environment are naturally made to live in that area. While growing, plants over time be come adapted to their specific environment. For example, if you look outside of your house, the trees and even grass had to adapt to survive. If you have noticed in the fall, the leaves on trees fall off. That is because when the season gets colder, the tree needs to take in less water to "keep warm" so to speak. Why is this important? I believe that without this knowledge, we as humans would be very confused and wouldn't be able to understand that what plants do to adapt, is natural.

Based off the information from the Unit and this video, biomes can be somewhat difficult to differentiate if you don't know the specifics. One important factor in defining a biome is the types of plants in that region. So for example, in the grasslands, you will primarily see grass, and a few trees. Why is knowing this important? If you are in the Tundra biome and are trying to plant a flower, you most likely won't succeed. That is because of the temperatures, soil, and weather that the Tundra lacks that a flower needs to survive. Without having this information, we humans wouldn't be able to grow or understand the biomes that we are in.

Plant domestication is so important even today. Without the knowledge of how a plant can evolve in a biome, we wouldn't know which crops are sustainable to grow. Like the PhD student in the video mentioned, using the studies and knowledge of domestication, we can also understand how to grow a plant in a drought or an insect infestation. Nowadays, we can plant something like a fruit and know the best season to grow a plentiful harvest. Domestication is so important because we can provide the food and environment we need. So, knowing this, I could confidently know when and how to plant something like a vegetable!

I chose this video because it kind of sums up why plant domestication is important not only for survival, but for society as well. In the beginning, people were hunting and gathering, until they realized that farming exists. If it weren't for that discovery, the world's population today wouldn't be nearly as much. Now, looking at today's farming industry, a lot of farms are corporate owned, there are very few family owned farms anymore. It is so important to buy from local family owned farmers because not only is it helping them, it's helping you as well. Plant domestication in society has cultivated who we are today, and changed the game so many years before.

Plants are used in almost every medicine we consume today. In terms of a big scale, knowing that plants are beneficial have improved the health of the world! It's incredible that scientist have discovered the benefits. Without this knowledge, I believe the world's population wouldn't be as big as it is. In the video I provided, it shows only 4 types of plants, but there are so many more that help with specific health issues. With knowing all this, I am incredibly thankful for the people who have discovered this because who knows if I would've ever even survived my first cold!

I think the biggest lesson on learning about plants this semester, is that we cannot live without plants. Earth is filled with so many species and plants that have a purpose for the survival of the planet. For instance, if we didn't have trees, we as humans wouldn't survive because we wouldn't have oxygen. Plants play a vital role in the animal kingdom as well. If there wasn't plants, there wouldn't be food for the animals which wouldn't provide food for humans. All in all, plants are so crucial for every species, without it, we would cease to exist.
