Why did Bushell want the prisoners to dig deep under the prison?

Here are a few reasons why. One is because if they dug to close to the prison floor, they would be able to hear them digging. Another is because the dogs would be able to sniff them out and give away the tunnel.

How would the snow hinder the men's escape?

Once snow lies on the ground, it gets real thick becomes heavy. This means the snow could be light and would cave in the exit, or it would be to heavy/thick to move and they would have to keep their tunnel a secret for much longer. Down below is an example of the snow can get really thick.

This was to show that the snow was going to be difficult to get passed. The snow grew thicker every time it snowed. This means they would run out of time to get completely out.

They were returned to Stalag Luft III and other camps for long stays in the cooler. Year later, Allied tanks freed the survivors as Germany surrendered.

The theme was to keep your head up with courage while facing danger itself. I think this fits perfectly as this is pretty much the story. All the men were so brave even knowing that what all they would do could fail or succeed If ti failed, the other prisoners should know not to escape. They are all courageous as they work together and feel that this could work out.
