The space race was seeing who could send their rocket to space.Russia was the first to send something to space. On October 4, 1957 Russia sent the Sputnik to space. This surprised The U.S of how Russia's technology was good. In 1958 The U.S sent the explorer 1 into space. This was the same year that the president created NASA. Russia thought that they needed to step it up so in 1959 they sent the Luna 2 to space. Also on April 1961 they sent the  Vostok 1 to space.
