The teacher and student need to be on the same page when it comes to classroom etiquette. As mentioned in the text, "Teachers and students do not always ascribe the same meanings and intentions to student behavior" (Milner et al. pg. 16). If the student uses a joke as a means of showing understanding, the teacher might take the joke as rude or offensive. Understanding your students socioeconomic background can play a big role in whether you discipline a student or move forward with the lesson.

If a student does not follow the dress out rule for a PE program, the teacher should be able to handle the situation. Referring a student to the office for disciplinary action can cause negative impact for the student. The student might feel unwelcome to class if they are removed for not dressing out. If you remove a student from the class, they are missing out on learning opportunities. A teacher may pull the student aside and discuss with the student why they chose not to dress out. Make an effort to bridge this open communication with your students.

Equity and Equality posses similar ideas but consist of separate concepts. Equity is when a teacher gives the students the instruction they needs for their individual learning styles. For example, in PE, the instructor might verbally say the instructions (auditory learners) and also demonstrate them to the class for the visual learners. Equality is when a teacher gives the students the same amount of time to complete the mile. The teacher does not cut the activity short just because a student is not able to meet the required time.

Cultural teaching is about keeping concepts as neutral and central as possible. When a student experiences teachings the stem from their interests, they are more incline to listen and be more engaged in the classroom. This is important in physical education, as physical exercise is a need for every student. Students from the states might not know about Cricket. Implementing a Cricket lesson would be beneficial to students. Cricket uses basic movements (throwing, catching, running, and etc).

In a nutshell, bringing everything we have learned in this chapter to be used to manage a classroom. Not only understanding a students culture but being knowledgeable in their culture can go a long way in bringing respect in the classroom. Knowing when to use certain classroom management strategies when a student is not behaving can play a role in developmental and learning outcomes in the classroom. Learning the ins and outs of your students will only benefit the instructor. Establishing clear cut expectations in the classroom leads to more active engagement and less out of class repercussions.

Giving baseline assessments and then giving "end-of-the-year" assessments can show us how much a student progressed.

The length of the text can be a deciding factor if the student picks that text. Some students will read the table of contents and then read the ending to determine what the text is about. As a PE instructor, I could require the students to read an article related to the content area we are covering, and write a summary of the article.
