PIH opened the University Hospital opened in 2013 and is available to provide care to the 3.3 million people in the area. The hospital is a teaching hospital which creates a self-sufficient healthcare system. This is necessary so the country can survive without the help of foreign doctors.

Patients were surprised when Farmer would sit on their bed to treat them like humans while they were sick The picture also shows that Farmer was trying to be the best doctor he could in an abnormal setting. That can be seen from his casual clothes and the chair that the patient is sitting on.

After the medical treatments failed Farmer stepped in and prescribed the boy a new medication regimen. Farmer always looks for new methods to cure patients after the original plans didn't work.
