Tanja WessbecherThe first thing I learnt today was a disappointing experience: accept things the way they are. Then I experienced both, how much I can and can’t understand French during the morning and afternoon sessions. Today I could feel the difference between rhythm and melody. Have I ever thought about that before? I think it is very important for children and adults to have a place where you can learn about this and other cultural aspects.Today’s quote: “People value things more, if they understand the story behind it.”

Today I learnt some creole...and that the locals are proud of their culture and language and they make efforts to teach them to the next generation. Walking with Fabrice, I learnt a lot about their history and that my culture has many things in common with this culture from the other side of the world (myths of blood sucking women, coffee substitutes fie poor people, herbs that heal everything from curses to sour throat, etc).

Today i experienced myself with the rhythm inside me what i never thought it excist. It was amazig to meet the compteur and see how they make efforts through the music and stories to keep their creol culture alive. Kontakaz is an amazing idea how to tell children about their culture and roots and even if not everybody speaks the same language the language of the music can tell all the stories.
And i am still singing:
ll faut se mettre à chanter. Aussitôt que l'on se réveille!
And now i realized that is somehow the joy of the life. If you sing and you are happy from the moment you open your eyes in the morning, nothing can turn wrong, and you can stay positive!
I truly enjoyed the company of our group today and it is very nice to know you more and more!

I learned that you must change, you must be open to everything, and that you can change your opinion when you find out the history, story of the issue. Maybe you are not interested in that thing, but seeing, getting in contact with it, it becomes interesting, fun, etc. I learned that giving students an interesting and captivating assignment, what seemed boring, will become entertaining, interesting and captivating. I think now that music is the language that unites us.

Emoke Csollany
Today I listened to our guide talking about local plants, and I thought of my Hungarian students, who study gardening... I wondered how I could remember all the info I heard!🌴🌺 :) Is it crosscultural attitude? /
In the afternoon, the Storyteller musician spoke French but I speak English only, so I tried to understand body language and gestures also.. Was very interesting to remain silent, due to lack of language competence.
Thanks for the music played together! 😀🎶

Learning about my learning

Basically I am keen on learning and as soon as someone shows enthusiasm about something I am willing to get drawn to the topic. This worked for the plants in the morning and for the big participatory round of percussion before lunch. I loved to join in the enthusiasm of the kids around me. Unfortunately it didn’t work for the rythm session. Although Edgar had a catching personality, my fundamental belief of my incapacity with rythm prevented me from learning.

I also learnt that my judgement can be a hazard in my learning. People might do things that are so strange to me that I disapprove. With this kind of judgement I put a barrier between me and a situation. In the end I won’t learn from the situation but maybe from my feelings afterwards. We’ll see. There will be more strange situations in my life.

„Give learners the ownership of their learning“

Kontakaz - an educational center of Créole culture. Two words stand out - education and culture.
Education - at the full blast! In various degrees of our acceptance or denial (remember transformational learning diagram?). How political acts (or inacts) influence education. How we seek understanding in foreign language environment. How we react to stereotypes applied directly to us.
Culture - we are not born with a culture. We are born into a culture that shapes our identity. Each contact with another culture makes us reflect on our values and reshapes our identity. That were my thoughts when we all strugled in the storytelling/music session. We are always surrounded by a langugage but we do not understand a foreign language unless we learn it. And even though - there are still many nuances and expressions that convey significant meaning of which we might not be aware of. We are always surrounded by music but the rhythms are completely different just like these small nuances in a language... We were born into different cultures and different rhythms and that's why we find it so difficult.
