Manuel Elkin Patarroyo (Tolima, 1946) is a renowned Colombian physician who made scientific history by developing SPF66, the first synthetic malaria vaccine, in the late 1980s. His innovation demonstrated that vaccines could be manufactured in a laboratory through chemical synthesis, without the need for live or dead microbes. With a strong social conscience, he donated the patent to the WHO in 1993 to ensure that the treatment would be accessible to the poorest countries, an act that earned him the Prince of Asturias Award in 1994.

However, his legacy is complex and divisive. After initial successes in South America, subsequent WHO trials in Africa showed very low efficacy, halting its global distribution. Furthermore, in recent years, his work at the Colombian Institute of Immunology (FIDIC) has faced fierce legal and ethical battles with environmental groups due to the use and capture of Aotus monkeys in the Amazon for his research.
