There are so many people affected by cancer, including Terry, so he wanted to raise money and awareness for cancer and cancer research. By showing Canada the importance of finding a cure for cancer, the social and political change that Terry was trying to bring was the right to live, and the freedom to live freely without cancer. Terry also wanted to bring hope to the people dealing with cancer, and make the severity of cancer more known across the world.

Ever since Terry was young, he was determined. He was one of the smallest boys in his gym class, and had a passion for basketball, but was horrible at it. His friend Doug claimed that he could score twenty to nothing on Terry at the time. This didn't discourage or come even close to stopping Terry from getting good at the game. Every day before school he would go to the gym to practice his basketball skills, even when he was sick. His persistence and hard work lead him to become one of the best athletes in his school and graduating with the athlete award. By the end of high school, he was even able to score twenty to nothing against Doug, his friend that he had no chance of winning against when he was younger.

Not only was Terry determined to get what he wanted, but even if he didn't want it, he still worked hard at it. When his coach saw that Terry wasn't very good at basketball, he told him to run for cross country. Terry wasn't interested in running, but he did it anyway because it would please his coach. Surprisingly. he was scared to start running, because of how exhausting and demanding it was, but he trained anyways, and he remembered that the best part of it was his coach congratulating the skinny boys at the end.

(The Early Years)

BIOGRAPHY - Cancer & Creating the Marathon of Hope

In 1976, when Terry was 18, he felt the pain of cancer but didn't think much of it. Later that year, he got in a car accident with no visible injury and had his knee in pain, but still didn't think much of it due to him thinking it was because of the car accident. In 1988, he felt the pain again, but this time he assumed the cause was him playing too much basketball since it was the end of the season. He decided to go to the Simon Fraser University health center and was only given painkillers. One day, when coming back from a training run, Terry was in a tremendous amount of pain, so he went to his family doctor and found out how serious his pain really was. He went to the Royal Columbian Hospital, where he found out that he had osteogenic sarcoma, which is a bone cancer that starts in the knee. After doing a bone scan, he was told he had to get his leg amputated because of his fast the cancer was spreading. So on March 9, 1877, when Terry was 18, he got his right leg amputated 15 cm above the knee. While he was in the hospital, his coach from Port Coquitlam High school showed him an article about Dick Traum, who was an amputee who ran the NYC Marathon. Terry showed the article and told him he was going to do something like that one day. Terry was on a medication called methotrexate-adriamycin, which caused his hair to fall out and made him nauseous, but he felt even worse for the other people in the hospital. The thought of other people suffering worse than him because of cancer never left his mind, so Terry decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

RUNNING ACROSS CANADA

After having the idea to run across Canada with his amputated leg to make his dreams come true of raising $1 per person for cancer research, Terry ran over 5,000 Km, in 18 months to prepare. He started the run in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980. Terry wasn’t very known, but eventually, people started finding out and got excited about what he was doing, as a result of this, he started collecting more money. Even though Terry wanted to raise $1 per person, people started giving him a hundred dollar bills as he ran by. He ran about 42 Km a day through Quebec and Ontario, but on September 1st, 1980 after 143 days and 5,373 Km, 11 Km outside of Thunder Bay, he had to stop running because the cancer was found in his lungs. Terry became so known for what he was doing, that everyone across Canada was so surprised and saddened by this. Fortunately, Terry raised $23.4 million ever since he started the run, and died on June 28, 1981, knowing that his dreams had been fulfilled. After his passing, over 300,000 people walked, ran, or cycled for him and raised $3.5 million. The Terry Fox Foundation still continues Terry’s journey today.

Unfortunately, to this day, cancer still exists, but over $750 million has been raised around the world for cancer research in Terry’s name through the Terry Fox Run, which 30 countries across the world participate in, and around 3,000,000 kids participate in each year. A lot of buildings, a mountain, schools (14), parks, and roads (15) have been named after Terry, including 83 Km of the Trans-Canada highway, which was the highway where he stopped his race across Canada. He even has multiple films about him including; The Terry Fox Story (1983), Terry (2005) and Into the Wind (2010). Terry’s won many awards since his passing including; the Lou Marsh Award on December 19, 1980, the British Columbia’s highest civilian award on October 21, 1980, and many more. Terry’s also given the hope to many people across the world fighting cancer and has shown them that dreams can still come true. Overall, even though cancer still exists today, there's no doubt that we wouldn't be this far in cancer research without Terry and the Terry Fox Foundation.
