Scientists still don't know everything about tornadoes. But this area has many features that cause them to develop here so frequently.

1. The flat plains act as a highway to transport cold polar air
2. Flows of the jet stream intensify winds and the movement of the fronts
3. Warm dry air coming from the Rocky Mountains creates a dry line
4. Warm moist air coming from the Gulf of Mexico

The collision of these fronts are the perfect recipe for thunderstorms and tornadoes. When the cold front pushes the warm front into the atmosphere, we get condensation and thunderstorms. The downward movement of the low pressure column is intensified by wind shear. The dry line that is created by warm dry air separated by the warm moist air creates changes to the dew point temperature. This creates an imaginary "lid" for the atmosphere to prevent latent release of heat and the upper level winds will then intensify the creation of thunderstorms. If the weather system generates enough wind shear and a strong enough downward spiral, it can create a tornado.

May 2013 proved as a devastating example that these weather fronts have deadly consequences. A stalled front caused an extended period of severe weather over Oklahoma. The area saw dozens of tornadoes over a period of a few days.

This storm system resulted in the widest tornado in US history. The EF5 tornado touched down at 6pm and had wind speeds recorded at 295 mph and was 4.3 miles wide. Sadly 115 people were injured and 20 people lost their lives, including 3 veteran storm chasers. Luckily for the residents of Oklahoma City the twister shifted from its projected path, sparing hundreds of lives of those stuck in rush hour traffic while trying to flee the storm.

Living in an area prone to tornado's has driven the residents to create specialized warning systems, tornado shelters and enhanced building codes to endure the storms.
