Music videos and especially Thriller caused a controversy for MTV. The network came under fire for its lack of black artists, but executives worried that their viewers just wouldn't like Michael Jackson. They changed their tune once the ratings came in and Michale Jackson was a huge hit. Jackson led to Lionel Richie, Billy Ocean and other black musicians, though cautious network executives had to be persuaded all over again when rap became popular. MTV's impact was immense during the 1980s. It made artists like Madonna and Guns N' Roses into stars. But if you turn on MTV today, you'll have a hard time finding any videos at all.

While L.A. was by no means a "tiny hamlet" looking for validation, the city was certainly hoping to turn around its reputation as a "smoggy, sprawling megalopolis" lacking a center or any real civic pride. Detractors were quick to judge the choice of L.A. as too big, too unprepared, and too financially strapped. Plus, L.A. had already hosted the Summer Olympics once, back in 1932. So once the decision was made to have the Olympics in LA, The council knew to cut back and have a low-budget. Instead of hulking sculptures and tall towers which had been erected in many other cities, the team used inflatables and modified scaffolding to build simple, colorful landmarks. Signage and wayfinding was made from painted wood and Sonotubes—pretty much giant cardboard tubes like you'd find in the center of a roll of gift wrap— with a vinyl striping system. But Holly was a model back in the 80s and was the model for Breck Shampoo.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:

1) What do you remember from the 80's?
- Remember it being a high school and college student, Economy being in very good shape, I remember that getting out of school and finding a job was hard because being a model was very highly competitive back then, I did jobs throughout high school and college, but out of school was really difficult.

2) What do you remember as the gender roles for women?
- GENDER ROLES: Women were in the workplace because it was the year of the yuppies, but there was definitely no equality between men and women

3) What was the kind of style for women in the workplace
- The style was matching skirt and jacket with ruffle blouses for work

4) What were the biggest styles in college?
- The 80’s were also preppy I remember being in college and majority of the people wore preppy and plaid

5) What were the biggest hot spots and go to hang out spots?
- In the 80s the big thing was to go to Palm Springs, SPRING BREAK AND HOLIDAYS everybody wanted to go for high school. COLLEGE: was for sure Mazatlon and everyone went to Mazatlon, Mexico for a good time. I definitely went with my friends and it was a fantastic time.

6) What were the go to shoes or sneakers?
- Van tennis shoes were huge (lace up tennis shoes they were custom made and order different colors)

7) What were the most famous books of your era, was reading even a huge thing?
Books definitely were a big thing, but I know people loved to read Cosmopolitan, Vogue and Seventeen those were the hottest magazines back then (and still are)

8) Was art a huge influence in the 80's and if so was there any place in particular people went to appreciate it?
- It wasn't a HUGE thing, but it definitely was there, but definitely the biggest thing was to go to the MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) to go see the art.

9) As a model, you definitely would know who were the biggest fashion influences during this decade?
- There was a huge fascination with Princess Diana, she was a huge fashion icon and everybody wanted her hair and her style. Everybody wanted to be like her. That was more of the preppy and chic era of the 80's. For the more off the shoulder and neon colors look, Madonna was the queen, everyone was obsessed with her fashion and her music.

10) Did fashion trends start or originate from movies?

Oh for sure..FLASHDANCE was the craze so after that movie was released many people started wearing the aerobic look and even the grunge look and that was the same year that Madonna became hotter than hot. Perms were also always the hottest must-have look because they were a big deal!!

11) In your opinion what was the American Dream?

THE AMERICAN DREAM WAS HOME OWNERSHIP (People weren’t really in a hurry to have a family but the american dream was to be the power couple of both parents working and owning a home for sure)
