The three most important factors to the school reform process are:

· Quality of Teaching: Teachers need to be well-versed in up-to-date practices for what’s best for their students. Teachers that do not try to improve their teaching styles and stick with what once worked will start falling behind others in their ability to teach and their student’s achievement. High quality teachers are a must if school reform is to happen to make student success a reality.

· Motivation of the Student: Students need to be motivated to do well – whether that be internal or external motivation. There is something that will drive a student forward, and a high quality teacher will be able to find that motivation for each and every student. If students do not feel motivated to learn, then school reform will be a waste of time for all the adults involved.

· Learning Style of the Student: Teachers must pay attention to the learning styles of the students that they have. Every student is different, and if teachers treat every student the same, then school reform will fail. School reforms want teachers to look at each student individually to see how they learn best and what works best for the students, not the teacher.

The most important step in the school improvement plan is diagnosing the data you collected, as you will be unable to truly determine what issues the school needs to improve on without fully diagnosing the data you have collected.

The relationship that exists between professional development and the instructional strategies that are used for student learning is great. Teachers need more and more professional development in order to accommodate the wide range of students that will be entering their classrooms. Professional development allows for teachers to find new instructional strategies to use with their students, perhaps not all students. Learning new strategies is important, even if it will only apply to one of your students. The goal is to make every student successful, not most, so professional development is a must in order to find strategies that work for every student.

Other than assessment results, an important type of data to use when developing a school improvement plan is to look at attendance. Attendance is important in order to improve student learning. If a school is considered low-performing and has a bad attendance rate amongst its students, then that is something that will have to be looked at with the school improvement plan. You could have a school is low absenteeism, yet have a high number of students tardy to classes. So looking at and analyzing the attendance data is important when developing a school improvement plan.

I would prefer the use of data carousel, because teacher’s get more say in how the data is analyzed and used. Teachers get to write down their thoughts on all of the data that is presented to them. Then, leadership teams get together to figure out how to solve the weaknesses within that data. I think that the teachers having a say in how the data is used makes what eventually happens from the data analysis more meaningful to the teachers.

From Chapter 6 of our book, I think the most important idea that I read was the creation of a monitoring plan for a school’s SIP. This plan will allow for the administration and teachers to have a check on themselves that makes sure they are following the plan and not reverting back to old ways or tactics. This is a big part of improving a school’s culture, and this monitoring plan will help to make sure that all staff members are getting on board with the new plan.

“School improvement requires systematic changes that cannot be accomplished in a short period of time; often, not even in a single school year. Setting goals and benchmarks helps to monitor implementation, and the plan should be adjusted long-term to fit any shifts that occur.” I think that this quote is the most important because it points to the fact that school improvement plans will not be an overnight fix. It will take a concerted effort from all staff members to make sure that the goals and benchmarks are being followed through with in order to improve student achievement. This process will be ongoing as this may take several years to accomplish. 7J㲽/sa

The most important point that that I learned about the school improvement process is that the SIP’s goals and benchmarks need to be based off of a rigorous analysis of student data. This data needs to be wide-spread, meaning that it cannot simply be test scores. Schools need to include data about the school’s culture, student home lives, attendance rates, and instructional practices in order to best serve the students when you are creating goals and benchmarks for SIPs.
