So that they can focus more on the course concepts. And the teacher can provide some options for the same assignments or tests. The UDL lens is a new way of learning where we can ask students interests.

These are helpful when developing learning goals. It helps us look deeper and understand the strengths, needs and interests of the student.

Learner Profiles help us get to know the learner and they help the students to learn more about themselves. I like the idea of digital learning profiles. In Scotland, we used online learning profiles where teachers and students had the ability to add information to the learning journey. Parents have access to these learning journals and clearly see where their child is at, what they are good at and what they need to work on with specific next steps. Students and teachers can work together to create relevant and achievable learning goals.

Laura

I found the Learner Profile Infographic by Kathleen McClaskey informative. I am unfamiliar with the four steps she described, in particular, “Access”, “Engage” and “Express”. However, when I create learning profiles my students have always been actively involved in the process by following similar steps Kathleen described. It is interesting to learn new phrases and tools to help ensure Learner Profiles are created efficiently to progress throughout a student’s learning journey. I like how students are involved in the development of their learning profile and it is equally important to provide them with a choice on how they illustrate their strengths and needs. Following these steps illustrated in the infographic will allow teachers to guide students with consistency as they move from one grade to the next.

Laura

I am intrigued to learn about Kathleen McClaskey’s “Personal Learning Backpack”. I feel like this a toolkit in which students will build upon as they learn new skills and gain new tools as they develop as whole learners. They can reach into their backpack and add to their backpack throughout their learning journey to ensure success. Their personal learning backpack will be unique to the learner and available to them for a lifetime. I feel that, Personal Learning Backpacks, will provide each student with empowerment and the confidence they need to succeed.

In addition to Learner Profiles, how can we ensure young children under the age of 6/7 are actively involved in the creation of their profile, if they are not technologically familiar with avenues such as PowerPoint, Google Slides etc.? How much ownership/responsibility for their learning can we give to children aged 3-6?

Laura

Even with the traditional way of using learner profiles, whether by way of filling up a questionnaire, google slides or a self storyboard or a poem. Aren’t they at some level engaging the student in the same way as the UDL lens that kathleen talks about ?

Also, how do we use Access, Engage and Express model with the younger kids ? or kids who have come from another country and do not have the writing skills needed and struggle with language ?

The PLB or the personal learning back pack is another tool that intrigues me and i would like to explore it further where the student himself advises what he would like to learn and what tools he would like to use.

After students complete learner profiles, how do I build independent learners even when the student is aware of their learning experience, styles, etc.? This is something I struggle with. Students may understand their strengths and desires as learners but don’t always know how to seek support. How do we keep students accountable for the goals they set while integrating them with the curriculum? Often I find that students will set their goals but they don’t always revisit them throughout the year.

Learner Profiles help students to share information about themselves as a learner (skills, strengths, interests, life experiences, and potential barriers to learning). Learner Profiles can be created at the beginning of the semester and added to throughout the learning period. Profiles can be created in the form of a Google Slides presentation that the student creates about themselves or Google form with questions students answer. Overall, learner profiles help teachers better understand their students and develop assessments with them in mind.
-Shelby

In the article “Here’s everything you need to know about Learner Profiles”, Lynch comments on the fact that it can be difficult to create a thorough leaner profile for all of your students: “But with so many students in your classroom, how can you get to know each of them on an individual level?” This made me think about how generally each student creates a learner profile of some type in each of their four courses in high school. I find by the time students get to their fourth period class, they’re tired of talking about themselves. I wonder if it would be more effective for students to work on one more detailed learning profile throughout the day that could be shared amongst their teachers. This learner profile could also be added on to at the beginning of second semester too.
-Shelby

I read the secondary learner profile from New Zealand’s Guide to Developing Learner Profiles that was created with the student and found it to be very comprehensive. I’m wondering how long it took to compile such a detailed learner profile? Was each section of the learner profile completed each day? What kind of scaffolding was put in place to help students when creating their learner profiles?
-Shelby
