Life in the 1960's Bay Area was full of youth who were sick of being told how to act and what to think. This is seen with document 2 The Free Speech Movement where young people were tired of being policed by their university and set out to purposely violate regulations on campus as a form of protest. "An excited crowd was milling about, mostly craning their necks and goggling at all the excitement, but seemingly willing to go along with whatever irritated the administration and made the most fuss." This connects to the main argument by showing college students laughing in the face of authority.

There was the Civil Rights Movement, the counterculture, and amazing music like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. It was a decade of revolution and self-expression. The 1960s were vibrant with social movements, groundbreaking music, and a space race climaxing with the moon landing It was also a time of change, from fashion to politics. Plus, the counterculture brought a wave of new ideas and lifestyles.

Life like in 1960s was full of people who wanted to explore and try new things. In San Francisco's Haight Ashbury District, it is mentioned in Document 1 that newcomers couldn't afford food or a place to stay. Additionally, one person from Document 1 said that the 60s was a "cultural revolution" of "euphoric rainbows and psychedelic colors that will remind of the 60s...out of it came the peace movement, rock music, meditation, etc..." This shows that people wanted to have fun doing new things during the 60s and it inspired others to change well.

Life in the 1960s Bay Area was full of cramped VW vans in the summer, youthful idealism, and a whole new way of living. This is seen in document 1 where people from all over the US, around 75,000 people or so, arrived to the Bay Area with little to no money, but they had a specific destination floating in their mind: San Francisco’s run-down Haight-Ashbury district. Everyone was accepted into any group during that time. “What was cool was that you could join a group of strangers anytime, anywhere, and you knew you’d be accepted. You only had to walk out your door to join the fun.” Said 60-something Journalist Mike Lafavore.

Audrey S.

It was a cultural revolution for all, especially residents of Haight-Ashbury. In Document 1, pop artist Peter Max said, "Out of it came the peace movement, ecology, natural foods, yoga, meditation, animal rights and great rock music from Hendrix, Dylan, the Beatles, the Who, Ravi Shankar, the Mamas and the Papas, and so many others". It goes on to show the different types of things the youth had discovered and implemented into their own lives.

There were others that came from many different cities to experience what San Francsico had to offer to them. In Document 1, journalist Mike Lafavore said, "What was cool was that you could join a group of strangers anytime, anywhere, and you knew you'd be accepted. You only had to walk out of your door to join the fun." This explains why people felt comfortable around anyone because they all just had a good time. This shows that people were enjoying and living their life.

Michaella Canaleja

Life in the 1960s was kind of cool there was a lot of music and cultural revolution going on at the time. A lot of people were taking and freedom and telling other people how they feel expressing themselves in a way people listened to music, did art , and also that’s when the civil rights movement was going on. Then there was the moon landing when there the first man to ever step foot in the moon and millions of people were watching . I would say in the 1960’s life was good it was fun exciting and new things that have never been done before a really nice time in life .

In document 2, it tells us how just changed how if they protested, everyone else will gain the courage to do so and join in. It shows how just one little movement can change the whole system and even gain more freedom and rights.

Cecil J.

life in the 1960s Bay Area was built around freedom. People began to dress more casually, drug use became more accepted and normalized, and a movement was built off of not following the rules. Music, artwork, fashion, and drugs all were part of the normal. "they took drugs, made love, (and) made music". Robert Love says. This shows that they popularized a lifestyle that we still see in the Haight today.

Life in the 1960s Bay Area was Full of excitement with many newcomers. Many people from around the world came to San Francisco by rail, cars and thumb, VW vans and on foot. The 75,000 newcomers arrived with rarely enough money to survive the night. People were just trying to see where life takes them and try new things. According to 50 years ago, a tiny part of the boomer generation tried to change the world. Did they succeed (Doc 1), they stated that many took drugs, made love, made music, raided many stores and did what they wanted to. A new style that was created during the 1960s was called “hippies”, they were a new style that many people started to follow. It was very colorful and different from suits.

-Gordon Gong

For now, there was great movements like freedom of speech and cultural change that struck the USA for civil rights and a different lifestyle but there were also people who hate the idea of this change of music style and clothing. We get to see a lot of new music arises like the rolling stones and beetles that got different people together and now our iconic peace signs were created as a symbol during the era.
