Technology in the classroom is up for debate. Should it be made available, encouraged or opposed in the classroom? Are the advancements in technology a good thing or are we making a big mistake. In this course we have seen and debated ourselves on both sides of the argument and watched documentaries made on the subject.

Technology is an asset and a distraction in the classroom. Some students can handle technology and others are handled by it. It is already impacting how children think, behave and learn. We have to understand the ways technology affects us and children. We have to learn to adapt ourselves to technology if we are to be successful in the digital times we live in. For one, many students believe that they can multitask and are often doing several things at once on their computers. However research shows that multitasking is ineffective but students and adults alike continue to do it.

Technology is interactive and engaging, students find it interesting and are more likely to want to be apart of the classroom if a device is involved. Assignments can be made virtual and require students to complete them online in groups or individually. Google documents is a great tool for digital group work as it allows students to make changes and additions to one document simultaneously. They can also communicate ideas with one another on the document. They can complete projects together outside of class from anywhere. Students can use google documents to take collective notes during class time with the ability to answer each others questions without taking time out of the lecture.

Technology is full of distractions, students can easily be doing anything other than studying or listening when they have a computer in front of them. It would be an issue that teachers would have to find new ways to cope with and find new methods of monitoring students. Technology can malfunction and throw off a whole planned assignment and those planned assignments take much longer to plan with all the different variables a teacher must consider.

Students are also having smaller attention spans due to the fast paced nature of technology. We must learn how to adapt our teaching and learning to this new developing issue. Or find a way to fight back against it. Students are spending copious amounts of time online obsessing over their like status and pop culture. These students are also being manipulated by big companies and they are happy to be used. We must teach children to use the internet wisely and be wary of manipulative tactics. Our youth are easy to targets to manipulation and critical thinking is on the drop. If we don’t adapt to technology it will have negative effects on teaching and learning.

Digital nation is one video that went over such arguments but seemed outdated. Some of the information was still good but a lot has changed over the years for worse and for better. One of the more interesting points made in digital nation was about multitasking. This is something that most people do now and the point of the experiment shown in digital nation was to prove if it works or not. If we’re actually doing something that is more unproductive.

Something that can be taught through technology. Students will have to learn to care for their own devices, check their own class assignments and remember to have their devices with them. Technology is a great and ever changing tool that expanding to more aspects of our lives.

Using technology, a guest can be invited in the classroom without having to move a muscle. A professional in a field related to a class topic can be asked to speak to the class via video chat. A whole other class of children from anywhere in the world can be invited in the classroom via video chat. Obviously it would be a great learning tool and experience for children to meet a professional and see a classroom from anywhere in the world like India or Africa. Children also need to be cultured and have communication skills if they are to be ready for a career.

Not every student who walks through your door will have access to technology and may end up left behind in the classroom. Educators would need to provide resources for such students to prevent this but there is an extreme lack of school funding. No teacher could afford to supply students with laptops every year either. Those devices can get broken or stolen, which will throw off a student from course and anger a parent. There are a lot of messy loose ends with new technology friendly classroom.
