LET'S COMPARE.

Let's compare ourselves to people worse-off than us; that is, people who've never been on holiday, who can't have three meals a day, whose family members are all unemployed or who find it too difficult to make ends meet. This way, we'll be able to appreciate how privileged we are and to value all the goodness that life has given us.
Personally, I see this idea as a great way to accept what I have and enjoy life without the constant need to waste money like water.
Eva R-Maestre
WHAT ABOUT YOU?

An efficient way to save money and to contribute with sustainability is not to waste food. If we don’t buy great amount of perishable food we will be able to use all of it. And, just in case some food gets in poor condition, take it to feed your pets or any other animals, instead of buying food for them. It is obscene to see hundreds different types of food for pets in supermarkets while millions of people are suffering famine all around the world.
Juan Antonio.

MAKING A LIST: Well, it is very difficult to save money nowadays because we live in a consumer society. In my case, when I go shopping especially food and clothes, I always make a list including only what I need. I learn this way to save money from my parents. People, especially women, buy things on sale they really don't need. Making a list of your real necessities is a good way to save money and to think about your future.

Nowadays you can find lots of colourful, interesting or surprising products which you might be tempted to buy, but there are other more important things that may not be so appealing to expend money on. Having a goal in mind when shopping is the best tool against impulse buying.
Sergio Martínez

Nothing in excess

The best way for current people to reach the failure is to propose oneself impossible goals. Such a way is not only wrong but also very hard. One has to renounce at many things you need or merely you like; you have to fight against the shop window’s dazzling lights, the friend’s fake smile, the seller’s disdain and what is worse the feeling of being doing the idiot. It’s very tired to get up thinking in the daily temptation, when you want to see the last blockbuster or to buy something trendy or to get the newest. Only the richer people or the dreamer can live such a non-life, the first because in them such a non-life can be a pose or a hoax, a way to get more money, the second because of its ideological position.

For the rest the best way to reduced consumption is the way taught by the old Greeks that’s to say: nothing in excess.

Personally, I wouldn't mind to spend a certain period of my life bartering and living on what mother Nature provides.
I'd like to join a community which doesn't need too much to live on and exchange my abilities for food, for instance. I guess this community would live in an isolated village, far away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.
Sometimes, when I read stories of business people with stressful and hectic lives who decided to give all up and move to a quieter place a do a plainer job, I do think I envy them a lot and want to follow their decision.
Luis

Hi, I've just read this advice on an interesting website in order to save a few bucks:
1. Plan out and cook your own meals. Dining out often is a huge money drain.
2. Clean out your fridge and pantry. You'll find good food you didn't know you had.
3. Buy in bulk the things you would normally buy. You'll get more for your bucks.

I agree with all three of them. We sometimes buy compulsively and haven't realised we have it at home: from food to clothes, cosmetics, toiletries or stationery. We definitely should be careful with what we spend our salaries on. It's the only way to make ends meet and perhaps, save up for a rainy day, or.. at least, for a mini break in family!
Laura

I've recently started track my expenses sing a tool like Mint.com. It can be done simply keeping a running log, which will help you see how much of your income is spent frivolously. So, I register every single thing I buy, from food to drinks or toilet paper to pencils. This makes me aware of the need to save up and keeps reminding me that I don't need to go to the shops every so often. I've never liked to splash out, but it's true that sometimes I've indulged in buying silly things I didn't really need because I fancied them or they were on sale. So, remember, keep a record of all your expenses and you'll keep your monthly income under control.

Imagine yourself choosing 33 pieces of clothes or less for 3 months from your current wardrobe. To start with, you should choose them to wear in a daily basis. Obviously, sentimental piece of jewellery, sleep wear and underwear are not included in the defiance.

In the second week, you will find easier and quicker to make your outfits. Besides, you will be choosing more neutral, combinable and atemporal clothes that won’t be old-fashioned.

By the time, you will be prepared to donate some items that haven’t been worn or even organise a swapping party with friends! Do you think you can manage it?

Cristina C.
