Marcellin Champagnat was born during 1789 on the 20th of May the same year of the revolution. He lived in Marlhes, a village in the mountains of east-central France. He was born into a Christian family from whom he received a basic education. Marcellin’s mother and aunt instilled within him a deep devotion to the virgin Mary. His father was a famer and a merchant who played a significant role in the politics of the village and the religious aspects. He sought out a school education but only attended for one day due to conditions. Marcellin then started working with his father rearing lambs and was considered quite successful and skilled at it. But one day the world of a passing priest made a striking impression on him. He believed God was calling him to the priesthood so Marcellin began to study, even while those around him aware of his limitations, tried to dissuade him. When Marcellin was 16 he attended the minor seminary in Verrieres (1805-1813) and was a member of the happy gang. Sadly, Marcellin failed school that year and he was sent back home. Later with the help of his aunt Marcellin attended saint Irenaeus seminary in Lyons. He made many companions such as Jean-Marie Vianney, the future Cure of Ars, and Jean-Claude Colin who was to become the founder of the Marist Fathers. He joined a group of seminarians whose goal was to found a congregation bearing Mary's name and including priests, sisters and a lay third order the "Society of Mary" for the re-Christianisation of society. They were ordained on the 22ndof July 1816. The day after their ordination, these young priests went to consecrate themselves to Mary and to place their project under her protection at the shrine of Our Lady of Fourviere. Marcellin was sent as curate to the parish of La Valla. His ministry there included visiting the sick, catechizing the children, helping the poor, and helping families to live the Christian life. His simple, direct style of preaching, his deep devotion to Mary, and his apostolic zeal, made a profound impression on his parishioners. His encounter with a dying 17-year-old boy who had absolutely no religious instruction, shook him to his depths, and moved him not to delay any longer in putting his plans into action.

On 2nd January 1817, only six months after his arrival in La Valla, marcillin assempled his first two followers. Creating the congregation of the little brothers of Mary and was open to all young poor people that would accept his gracious offer. The he hired Christian teachers, catechists, and educators of young people to help him educate his brothers along with his disciples. Marcellin turned the ungrateful into the passionately devoted people of god, turning them into generous apostles. Soon after multiple expansions the marcilins schools startedfacing difficulties from the clurgy and general who didn’t understand weren’t able to house as many students as the public demanded and what this inexperienced young priest with no material resources was trying to accomplish. However, the nearby villages continually requested brothers to see to the Christian education of their children.

To make Jesus Christ known and loved" is the brothers' mission. The school is the privileged setting for this mission of evangelisation. Marcellin taught his disciples to love and respect children, and to give special attention to the poor, the most ungrateful and the most neglected, especially orphans. Spending a great deal of time with young people, with simplicity, family spirit and love of work, and all of this carried out as Mary would have, were the essential points of his vision of education.

In 1836, the Church recognized the Society of Mary and entrusted to it the missions of Oceania. Marcellin took his vows as a member of the Society of Mary, and sent three brothers with the first missionary Marist Fathers to the islands of the Pacific. "Every diocese of the world figures in our plans", he had written.

Marcellin became very ill and was diagnosed with a lengthy illness gradually wore down his robust constitution. Worn out by his labors, he died at the age of 51 on 6th June 1840, leaving this message with his brothers: "May you be of one heart and one mind. May it be said of the Little Brothers of Mary as of the first Christians: see how they love one another!"

The good Samaritan:

25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[a]; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b]”

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Biblical criticism: the bible story "The good Samaritan" is found in

Luke; 10:25-37. This was a story Jesus used to educate other around he to teach the good way of god. They parable/ story is a message Jesus wants people to understand. no matter what your role you shouldn't be treated lesser and a role shouldn't be used as a excuse not to help others. To further understand the parable you need to know the complete context of the time in which it was written, during the time it was considered unclean to help a sick or even dead person the priest/ Levite would have to clean himself again. which a sararitain ( a mixed racial being half jew ) didn't't have any special laws around the unclean and was then open to help others. this further pushed the ideas of the text onto the followers of Jesus.

St Marcellin Champagne acted in a similar way to the sararitain but even though he was ranked as a member of society with decent class he still allowed himself to help the poor and help other find god in their lives.
