Ultrasound has been around for a number of years. In recent years the machine has become smaller and more available. The use of ultrasound technology was reserved to ultrasound technicians and physicians but is continuoulsly not utilized by nurses. There is a new innovation in the way ultrasound technology can be utilized everyday and can be implemented into common nursing practice for patients with difficult IV access.

Why is Ultrasound guided IV placement important ???

Obtaining IV placement is a critical aspect of nursing care and management of patient conditions. This becomes challenging in patients with difficult vasculature. This being dialysis patients, oncology patients, children, IV drug users, obese patients and many other reason IV access could pose a challenge. Use of ultrasound can significantly decrease time to obtain lab work, decrease time for some radiological imaging, medication interventions such as pain control and decreasing length of stay for these patients.

Davis, E.

With the use of ultrasound it is common that the catheter is placed deeper within the patients tissue. The dwell times or longevity of the lines placed by ultrasound were on average 5.9 days VS standard IV placement of 3.8 days. There is also less need for Vascular Access Specialist Teams :VAST consultations meaning less PICC line placements.

Fung, C.

I have experienced the numerous benefits of ultrasound but continuously hear nurses say they cannot use the ultrasound or are coming from a facility that did not have this machine. This is a life saving tool for patients that can and has changes patient outcomes. Venous access is the quickest way to see into what metabolic abnormalities are currently causing their illness. Ultrasound Iv placement is the quickest way to intervene with life saving medications during life and death situations. This is a tool that all healthcare workers who start IVs and care for patients need to have at their disposal. This ultimately is for better patient outcomes and utilization of technology that is available to change lives.
