Assalamualaikum. This week’s lesson focuses on two important themes: the proper manners (Adab) in seeking knowledge and the role of the Quran as the ultimate source of guidance. The discussions highlight why and how knowledge should be pursued with the right intentions, and how the Quran provides a framework for understanding our purpose and responsibilities as human beings.

The notes cover two main themes: Adab in seeking knowledge, which emphasizes learning with proper manners, distinguishing ethics from adab, and understanding that education’s purpose is to shape a complete human being through knowing, doing, living together, and being—not just becoming a commodity; and the Quran as the Book of Guidance, which differs from previous scriptures and should be studied in stages (signs of the Creator, Oneness of God, stories of Prophets, and Seerah) using reliable translations, scholars, and apps, to help one recognize their role and responsibilities as Allah’s creation.

Acquisition of ḥikmah (positive values) from ʿibādah means gaining wisdom and good character through worship. It begins with setting the right niyyah, where a person sincerely intends to worship Allah for His pleasure, not for praise or habit. This intention gives meaning and direction to every act of worship. Next is applying the right ʿamal, which means performing worship correctly and consistently according to Islamic teachings, allowing actions to shape discipline and responsibility. Finally, internalising iḥsān involves developing positive virtues such as sincerity, patience, humility, and awareness that Allah sees everything. When these three are combined, ʿibādah transforms a person’s character and leads to true ḥikmah.

Reasons and Sources of ḥikmah from ʿibādah can be seen through the objectives of the main acts of worship mentioned in the Qur’an. Ṣalāh, as stated in Sūrah Al-ʿAnkabūt (29:45), prevents immoral and wrongful behavior, nurturing self-discipline and moral awareness. Ṣawm, mentioned in Sūrah Al-Baqarah (2:183), is prescribed to develop taqwā, teaching self-control, patience, and empathy. Zakāh, highlighted in Sūrah Al-Tawbah (9:103), purifies wealth and the soul, cultivating generosity, social responsibility, and compassion. Ḥajj, referred to in Sūrah Al-Baqarah (2:197), trains believers to avoid sinful acts and practice restraint, unity, and humility. Together, these acts of ʿibādah are key sources of ḥikmah that shape righteous character and positive values.

Preparation for Ṣalāh with khushūʿ involves both physical and spiritual readiness. Ṭahārah through wuḍūʾ or tayammum cleanses the body and prepares the heart for standing before Allah. The conditions for the acceptance (ṣaḥīḥ) of Ṣalāh, such as proper intention, facing the qiblah, covering the ʿawrah, and performing it within the prescribed time, ensure that the prayer is valid. The pillars of Ṣalāh form its essential structure, guiding the worshipper to pray correctly and attentively. Finally, the application of Ṣalāh based on situations—such as qaṣr and jamʿ during travel, performing nawāfil prayers, or adapting prayer during illness—shows the flexibility and mercy of Islam, helping a person maintain khushūʿ in all circumstances.

The virtues found in Ṣalāh with khushūʿ are reflected in the character it builds within a believer. Al-Ṭāʿah develops submission and loyalty to Allah, as consistent prayer trains obedience to His commands. Al-Jihād is shown through the inner struggle to maintain focus, sincerity, and consistency in Ṣalāh despite distractions. Muḥāsabah is encouraged as prayer becomes a moment of self-reflection, reminding a person to evaluate their actions and intentions. ʿIffah is nurtured because Ṣalāh restrains a person from sinful behavior and strengthens self-control. Finally, Tawaḍḍuʿ grows as standing humbly before Allah reminds the worshipper of their dependence on Him, shaping a humble and respectful character.
