Matt Baker tweets about Useful Charts and had a tweet about 'tap codes' which reads (these are saved in the Pictures>Codes and Cyphers file on the hard drive)

This is worth a listen. Apparently, there is a South Indian form of rhythmic singing that can be used to explore patterns and rhythmic cycles. This story (which links to a performance video and other examples) shows us Indian percussionist B.C. Manjunath using the Fibonacci sequence as a basis for a rhythm cycle...

A big body of work on which I have been focused for about a year deals with the identification of patterns in fields of information. I am starting small. Inspired by a weird 1970s book - The Language of Pattern by Keith Albarn and a a slew of others - I have been trying to figure out how numbers become shapes. Mostly, I've concentrated on times tables and counting sequences, employing Albarn's method of reducing numbers by using digit sums to get them to numbers between one and nine (this can take a few steps...for example, 84001 is calculated as 8+4+0+0+1 = 13, and finally 3+1 =4).

I did a lot of this in Rome.

At one point is seemed like a good idea to use the famous Fibonacci sequence. I got about 100 or 150 numbers out in the sequence and started to notice something...the digit sums themselves form a pattern.

Turns out I am not the first to see this...I was delighted to come across this site where Gary Meisner writes about a 24-digit repeating sequence of digit sums of Fibonacci numbers. In case you're interested (or trying to figure out if aliens are trying to communicate with you...) the sequence is:

1,1,2,3,5,8,4,3,7,1,8,9,
8,8,7,6,4,1,5,6,2,8,1,9.

For ever I have said that I got into painting because it happened in a world I wanted to be part of, but for the last few years I have had to deal with the fact that the milieu of music and bands is closer where I come out of...though I was't a raver, I ran a record store in Boston at this time. I have the bad habit of adopting new ideas as they come down the pike, often discovering after a few tries that what I thought would be a great tool is, in fact, a mess in the making. So it was when I game-ified some classes almost ten years ago. I have moved away from that glamorous idea, even though when I talk about it to students they re excited about it and urge me to bring it back....this was a good reminder of why it seems like a bad idea.

Flag communication

I have been meaning to read this fully and look forward to getting a close read on it...this part is what holds my attention...

In terms of flag semaphore, this new anti-war symbol could be read as a combination of the letters, too: ‘N’ and ‘D’ standing for “nuclear” and “disarmament,” made up of vertical line for the D and two downward-angled lines for the N. These overlaid signs are set within a circle to form a simple but memorable black-and-white graphic. Implicit in the symbol is an abstract individual standing within the ring and holding up the “flags” to signal their stance against nuclear weapons.

Always on the look out for old things

I remember being a student in Art History 101 and wondering if being able to identify the earliest work of art would settle anything. It was mid-semester and we were barely to ancient Egypt and all of human culture seemed a whirl of conflicting values and agendas, all playing itself out through images and objects. In other words, it was a well-taught class.

When we could look at the first photo, I remember thinking, "At least we can say here is where it all began" and immediately feeling the worthlessness of that knowledge.

So I keep up with paleo art with a mordant curiosity. It's interesting that this example comes from Borneo, and I look forward to the way that shifts the conversation about early humans and their art...

The shape of things

I am gathering steam for a drawing class next semester that looks at things that cannot be seen. I am interested in the idea that we might spend a lot of time on reading...not only illustrating things that come from text, but trying to use visualization to describe what reading is like.

I got a little of this from Stephen Johnson's diagrams of TV plots in Everything Bad is Good for You. I was superpsyched to run across a reference to Kurt Vonnegut's ideas about the shapes of stories in Ellen Lupton's Design is Storytelling (shout our to Rosie Carlson for pointing the book out to me). Of course, Manuel Lima's book on Trees has some arresting analysis of writing...

A story on WHYY talked about Trump supporters' planned march tomorrow in Philadelphia and mentioned the 3% group. They haven't made the SPLC Hatewatch list yet, but they sound like prime candidates.

According to the Wikipedia entry, 3% want to "defend the constitution." Let's see if they defend the 14th amendment with the same vigor they apply to 'protecting the 2nd amendment...

Another Code

I was super-psyched to read the chapter on commercial telegraph codes in David Kahn's monstrous Codebreakers tome and have been itchin' to tap out messages to mining companies and brokers in remote branch offices. So I have been on the hunt for actual codebooks in libraries online.

My great find for this week is the American Tobacco Cipher of 1880 published by Adolphus Meier & Co. in the Kentucky Digital Library. Once you get through the currency conversion tables, there some some fun to be had in this strange code that uses whole words (many dictionary ready terms) to replace business phrases.

I don't think it was inspired by any important events or anniversaries, but I was glad to read Mark Dery's piece about Edward Gorey, Frank O'Hara and the Gay Underground on Lit Hub this afternoon. It brought me some much needed relief from an otherwise dreary day...as only Gorey and O'Hara do. Why? I'll let Dery spell it out for you:

Style is key here: consciously or not, Gorey was acting out a “revolt through style,” a phrase coined by cultural critics to describe the symbolic rebellion, staged in music, slang, and fashion, by postwar subcultures—mods, punks, goths, and all the rest of them. Gorey wasn’t so much rebelling against the conformist, compulsorily straight America of the late 40s as he was airily disregarding it, decamping to a place more congenial to his sensibility, a world concocted from his far-flung fascinations and conjured up in India ink.

In the last few years, I have begun to notice a real problem in art education. Kids can't write.
Not that they cannot organize thoughts into sentences and produce ("process") lines of text on a computer or phone (though many of my peers would argue they can't do this, either). They cannot perform basic handwriting functions, which means they lack some fundamental analytical skills useful for drawing.
This observation grows from a long abiding sense that how we do things impacts what we do. So I read Tim Park's essay on writing on a computer with interest. I suppose it goes in a file with Alexander Langland's Craeft and a million other things...
A passage:

[...] should you step back? Time to leave your computer and phone in one room, perhaps, and go and work silently on paper in another. To turn off the Wi-Fi for eight hours. Just as you once learned not to drink everything in the hotel minibar, not to eat too much at free buffets, now you have to cut down on communication. Artist Dove Bradshaw has made some interesting works that challenge the assumption that painting has a stabile, permanent image. She employs media that respond to atmospheric conditions like temperature and humidity. Cornelia Parker

An artist who gets talked about in depth in that book on fragments is Cornelia Parker. If you don't know her work, I think you should look at it. She has made art with things like the burned remains of churches destroyed by arson, wedding silver, engagement rings, and other objects freighted with memory.

In some ways, she is a representative of what I think of as a huge trend in contemporary art...I think it started with the Food Network and shows that made cooking easier by using premade parts or mixes (like a rotisserie chicken or a cake mix..). Artists - like Parker - who use objects or practices saturated with cultural importance can bootstrap their work into more advanced conversations by drafting on how much people already feel for and know about what's in the work...I happen to think Parker is really good at leveraging things (as is Dario Robleto another of my favorite 21st century artists...) but you can easily see how this can become 'seminar art' with a million lines of footnotes replacing any genuine material connection...

Let that be a warning...
