This was a wonderful collaboration between ReTree Hamburg & Seeds of Living Education to educate all grade 4 students in the Hamburg Central School District on the importance of native trees. School groups walked to the Community Center and went through four stations: Education, Observation, Twig Craft, & Tree Planting demo. NWF’s Trees for Wildlife supported the giveaway of 250 native red maple trees to the students and their families. The tree-hugging may have been a favorite of many!

Youth Environmental Alliance | 3,694 trees (2024)

The Youth Environmental Alliance held nearly 60 environmental education, stewardship, planting, and tree giveaway events. Over six thousand people have been engaged through these efforts, of which more than 4,600 were youth. During these programs, people learned about how trees provide habitat for wildlife, cool the planet, and remove pollutants from air and water. Events are held year-round.

Florida Federation of Garden Clubs | 4,330 trees (2024)

On January 19th, 2024, garden clubs across Florida held impressive Arbor Day ceremonies, tree plantings, and tree giveaways to celebrate Florida Arbor Day and the 100th anniversary of FFGC. More than 125 garden clubs simultaneously planted about 500 sizable trees.

At least 26 clubs gave away more than 8,000 native tree seedlings and 4,330 of those trees were supported by NWF.

Wakulla County Garden Clubs | 800 trees (2024)

Wakulla County residents attended the 20th Crawfordville (FL) Arbor Day Tree Giveaway on January 20th at the County Extension Office. The 800 trees that NWF supported were red cedar, chinquapin, live oak, dahoon holly, pignut hickory, overcup oak, eastern may haw, parsley haw, possum haw, rusty blackhaw, and sweet shrub.

Tennessee Environmental Council | 40,000 trees (2024)

Tennessee Tree Day 2024 engaged 19,741 volunteers statewide in planting approximately 120,000 native trees (40,000 supported by NWF) at more than 7,800 planting locations, which included all 95 Tennessee counties! The distribution of this number of trees relied upon a network of 162 local, volunteer-run community pick-up locations across Tennessee.

This year, Tennessee Environmental Council hit a huge milestone and planted its millionth tree through Tennessee Tree Day.

Green Columbus | 10,000 trees (2024)

Green Columbus hosts an annual, month-long Earth Day worksite campaign in Central Ohio to beautify and preserve the city. Plant materials are provided at no cost to partners, which include parks, churches, schools, civic associations, nonprofits, and more who host volunteer opportunities in April and come to pick up free seedlings at Keep Columbus Beautiful during the distribution date. This year, over 170 events throughout April successfully picked up and planted a record number of 74,000 seedling trees at restoration sites (including 10,000 native trees supported by NWF).

Northern Rockies, Prairie, and Pacific Region, NWF | 200 trees (2024)

Two hundred native trees were given away at IWFF WildFest, the MUD Earth Day Celebration, Earth Day Pint Night at GILD Brewing, the UM Earth Week Sustainability Fair, a pop-up giveaway at the Missoula Public Library, the UM Living Lab’s Air, Smoke, and Fire event (also hosted at the library), and an Arbor Day ceremonial tree planting event on the UM campus.

Green Columbus | 10,000 trees (2023)

In April 2023, Green Columbus supported 4,500 community volunteers across 160 worksites and planted 72,000 native tree seedlings (10,000 of which were supported by the National Wildlife Federation). The worksites included schools, places of worship, parks, community gardens, ecosystem restoration sites, and more.

Tennessee Tree Day 2023 engaged 21,706 volunteers in planting over 100,000 native trees in all 95 counties of Tennessee. The event was made possible by a partnership with the Tennessee Division of Forestry and 45 stakeholder groups including the National Wildlife Federation which provided 40,000 trees for distribution across 149 sites.

Youth Environmental Alliance | 2,663 trees (2023)

For many years, the National Wildlife Federation has partnered with the Youth Environmental Alliance (YEA!) to plant and give away tree seedlings at schools and community events in Broward County, FL. YEA! provides fun and engaging programs that support youth and the community to preserve and protect Broward’s unique ecosystems and wildlife while engaging youth to take action toward achieving a more sustainable economy and better world for generations to come. In 2023, National Wildlife Federation’s Trees for Wildlife program donated 2,633 native trees that were distributed to the community for planting.

Wakulla County Garden Clubs | 900 trees (2023)

In honor of Florida Arbor Day, the Wakulla County Garden Club held their 19th annual tree giveaway at the Wakulla County Extension complex in Crawfordville, FL. The National Wildlife Federation provided 900 native trees seedlings that were potted and cared for by the Wakulla County Garden Club, Florida Wildlife Federation and other partners to then distribute to residents.

Texas Conservation Alliance | 780 trees (2022)

The Texas Conservation Alliance, the National Wildlife Federation’s state affiliate in Texas, hosted two community-based native tree giveaways in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The first event was on the morning of 10/29/22 at the Laredo Center for Urban Agriculture and Sustainability (LCUAS) Community Garden where volunteers distributed native saplings with a planting guide and also provided a live demonstration on the best way to plant trees. The second event took place in the afternoon of 10/29/22 at the Starr County Fairgrounds where families received two trees, planting instructions and profiles of the tree that they received.

Friends of the Rappahannock | 6,000 trees (2022)

The community tree planting took place at the Tayloe Tract of the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Warsaw, Virginia. Partners included over 50 Friends of the Rappahannock staff, Refuge staff, students from Rappahannock High School, students from Aylett Country Day School, Northern Neck Master Naturalists, Shenandoah Habitats and general public volunteers. Volunteers planted 6000 hardwood trees; species included loblolly pine, oak species, tulip poplar, sycamore, black walnut, hickory species, river birch and persimmon.

Earth Day Columbus is the largest volunteer-driven service event for Earth Day in the country! Site hosts register events all over Central Ohio to plant trees and native pollinator plants with 5 to 100 other volunteers. This year, we had over 115 total worksites to plant a total of 30,000 native trees (10,000 supported by NWF) and 3,000 pollinator plants. The locations included schools, churches, parks, community gardens, ecosystem restoration sites, etc.

Crawfordville Arbor Day held a drive-thru tree giveaway at Hudson Park in downtown Crawfordville, Florida on Saturday, January 22nd, 2022. Nearly 700 native trees were given away to Wakulla County residents. A record 36+ volunteers plus students from the high school Environmental Club helped to make the event successful.

November 13, 2021: TCA partnered with Treefolks at Boggy Creek Greenbelt, Austin TX for a tree planting event to help restore the creek’s riparian zone. 35 volunteers participated in the tree planting. TCA provided educational materials on the ecological benefits of the trees. In total 590 trees were planted, 400 trees were supported by NWF's program.

City of Ann Arbor | 750 trees (2021)

On October 2nd, 2021, the 10,000 Trees Initiative, a program of the City of Ann Arbor’s Office of Sustainability and Innovations (OSI), held a Tree Giveaway event at the Leslie Science & Nature Center in Ann Arbor. Despite a steady rain towards the end of the event, 14 volunteers and three OSI staff members distributed 750 seedlings to 325 residents of Ann Arbor and the surrounding area. The species available were northern white-cedar (Thuja occidentalis) and eastern white pine (Pinus strobus), two Michigan-native conifer species.

The Weed Warriors and Nature Stewards of Burien hosted a tree give-away, followed by a tree planting event in a public area near a wetland we are restoring. At the tree give-away event at the Burien Farmers Market on Earth Day in the center of downtown Burien, we gave away 50 Western Red Cedars that were potted and ready to go into people's yards or to the tree planting event. Everyone receiving a free tree also received instructions, with pictures, on how to correctly plant a tree.

The tree planting event was attended by over 150 scouts and their families, representing 17 troops from the West Windsor-Plainsboro Service Unit of the Girl Scouts of South and Central New Jersey Council. Approximately 180 seedlings, all about 3-5 inches tall, were planted and 20 unplanted seedlings were taken home by scouts to plant in their own yards.

In April 2021, Green Columbus distributed a record number of trees, wildflower seeds, and pollinator plants, breaking our previous planting records. Over 40 groups planted 65,000 trees (10,000 supported by NWF) making this the largest reforestation effort in Central Ohio history.
