Which of the Ten Ethical Computing Guidelines do you think students violate most often?

One of the most common violations of the Ten Ethical Computing Guidelines that is most violated by students is "Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output". Plagiarism is a huge issue in education in which students will try and pass off others work as their own. The pressure to get a good grade in a class often cause some students to try and pass other's work as their own to get a better grade. In addition, more and more students are turning to using AI to do their work which is another form of plagiarism using a computer. Above is a graph that denotes whether they have known someone who has plagiarized or if they have plagiarized themselves. While all of these cases of plagiarism may not be related to using a computer to plagiarism, due to the presence of technology in schools, most of these have to involve technology and computing in some aspect.

Students plagiarize for a variety of reasons, as seen in the chart above. Some of the main reasons include that students believe that cheating is easier than doing the actual work, not having enough time, and most students believe that they will not get caught. In addition, it is becoming easier and easier for students to plagiarize using technology as they can use AI to complete assignments and find answers to assignments online.

Students can avoid plagiarism by following any of tips listed above such as paraphrasing, citing references, and understanding what plagiarism is. In addition, institutions and professors can help reduce this by using plagiarism detection tools, clarifying assignment expectations, promoting academic honestly and teach students about the consequences of plagiarism.
