As Bettina pushed him down the stairs, Jack was certain he saw her smile. It was the day after Jill's funeral, and Jack was on a hike to clear his head. It was difficult enough when he fell down and broke his crown, but when Jill came tumbling after, nothing could stop her, her body just went. As she laid in a closed casket, Jack couldn’t believe she was gone- they were hiking buddies, and had been for 5 years. At the wake, Bettina came up to him, offering to hike with him the next morning. He couldn’t say no, she was Jill's sister, and even though they didn’t really get along, she was much nicer than Will, Jill's talkative brother. It wasn't a nice day for a hike, but Bettina lead them up the hill, puffing every step. They reached the peak and shared some water.

"Y'know Jack, I never really liked ya. You and your stupid hiking, always takin' Jill away from me. She was my only friend! Do you know what it's like to have to put up wit' Will? The geezer never shuts up! So if I can’t have Jill, neither can you."

"Wait what?" Jack was alone now, no other pedestrians in sight. "Jill was the one who wanted to hike with me. She loved getting to the top, breathless and needing a gulp of water. I never wanted her to fall down--"

"You're putting the blame on a dead person Jack. You’re cruel! So goodbye." A vicious snarl sprang to her face and with one shove, he went flying down the stairs he had climbed so many times. But this would be the last… :(

As Bettina pushed him down the stairs, Jack was certain he saw her smile, but before a shout was able to escape his lips his head hit the concrete ground and he was sure he heard a crack.

***

Waking up in a groggy state Jack felt a sense of rising panic. Attempting to lift his arm was meet with a struggle against restraints tied around his arms and legs. He was strapped down to a wooden chair. Looking frantically around the room Jack noticed it was extremely dark and there was no windows. Surrounding him were dusty sheet covered furniture and cobwebs. What a place. Hearing thuds of footsteps above his head Jack's rising panic elevates even more and he starts rocking his chair in an attempt of escape - thrashing against his restraints burns began to form from the friction. A light switch flicks and Jack is forced to squint as his eyes adjust to the brightness.

"Hello Jack,"

Bettina. What the Hell. Jack opens his eyes and is horrifically greeted by Bettina; she is holding a big ass axe.

"Bettina, what are you doing?" She steps closer and stares into his eyes, she is sweating and her eyes are bloodshot.

"Bettina what the hell!" Jack repeats as he continues struggling.

"You’re going to pay for leaving me Jack" She raises the axe and Jack closes his eyes.

As Bettina pushed him down the stairs, Jack was certain he saw her smile. It was almost as if she enjoyed every second of his trip down the flight of stairs. Her eyes were glued to the now injured jack at the bottom of the stair. She licked her lips and slowly began to walk down the stairs while her right hand slid across the handrail. Jack was in too much pain to notice her movement. As he tried to stand up, a large throbbing pain awoke in his left leg causing him to twist and turn on the floor. It was obviously broken but Jack wanted to show no sign of weakness to Bettina. He knew it would only make her happier to see him even more hurt. He then took a deep breath and as he tried to fling himself up, he noticed a small figure standing in front of him. Jack was frozen in that moment. All the options ran through his head on how to get out of this situation. He began to use his hands to crawl backwards as Bettina reached out her hand. Jacks arms pulled him across the ground so fast that he didn’t notice that there was another flight of stairs. He fell once more tumbling and landing in awkward positions until he landed face first at the bottom of the stairs in a pool of his own blood. Bettina was too busy laughing to notice her brother’s final twitches. Then Tylah came around from the corner.

“I guess instead of fight or flight…he choose flight…of stairs” he said.

As Bettina pushed him down the stairs, Jack was curtain he saw her smile, "Go again." Yelled Jack. Sisterly love, nothing like it. Jack had been at Bettina's neck all week to play a game with him. Jack had finally learned about cardboard boxes and stairs. But there was no one to push him down. One night Jack and Bettina's parents were out for dinner and the baby sitting was out having a smoke, so Jack ran upstairs grabbed the box he had waited so long to use and placed it at the top of the stairs and yelled for Bettina. It was a great set of stairs, very steep and had a little bend in the middle to make it a little more fun. Crash, Bang, Boom, as Jack flies down the stairs, the baby sitting quickly puts out her cigarette and rushes inside to see Jack on the floor hanging upside down on the couch and Bettina not far behind him, with tears of laughter.

As Bettina pushed him down the stairs, Jack was certain he saw her smile. Black dots exploded across his vision as he crashed his way down the staircase. Jack landed in a crumbled heap at the bottom of the stairs, feeling as if he'd just been hit with a semi-trailer. Groaning with the pain he got up on his knees to see Bettina walking down the stairs with that wicked smile still on her face. Something was wrong though. She was changing into something unhuman. Jack got onto his feet and limped for the door, his muscles and bones aching after his trip down the stairs. He was sure that his shoulder had dislocated but he pushed through it, the front door in sight. Behind him Bettina followed him, laughing maniacally, amused by her prey's feeble hopes of escape. Jack reached the front door, opening it and slamming it behind him but instead of exiting onto the front porch he came out in another room, the monster that once was Bettina already there waiting for him, a sinister smile creeping across her lips.

"You didn't really think you'd get away that easy did you, Jack?"

As Bettina pushed him down the stairs, Jack was certain that he saw her smile. The boy tumbled to the ground and landed with a splat on the wooden floor. He groaned and looked back up at his older sister and brother, his face twisted in pain. Jack could tell that he was about to cry, and there was no way that Bettina was going to place the blame on him again, not this time. Jack sprung away and ran into his room, shutting the door behind him just as he heard the dreadful wailing and his Mum’s running steps. However, a few seconds later, Mum was at Jacks door, holding a crying Dan, with a smirking Bettina behind her. He knew straight away what would had happened, little innocent Betty had sweet talked her way out of trouble once again and the middle child would receive the punishment. Bettina flicked her hair over her shoulder and flounced off to the kitchen, most likely to eat the last of the chocolate while Jack would be condemned. I really hate her thought Jack, she’s going to pay for this, I’ll put a frog in her bed tonight and then she’ll be sorry.

As Bettina pushed him down the stairs, Jack was certain he saw her smile. His head crashed down onto the hard oak floor boards of the stair case, the smell of old feet bombarding his nostrils. That devil! Ever since our parents got married she's been out for his blood, he didn't realise she was being serious. By the second tumble onto his back, pain surged like lightning throughout his body, he suspicions were true. A brief glimpse up to the heavens reveals the darkened silhouette of his step-sister and her wicked, Mr. Hyde grin. Without even realising, Jack hit the bottom of the staircase, his body a mess of tangled limbs, unable to move, his body grew cold, with the only warmth coming from the trickle of blood running down his face. He saw Bettina coming down to him, like a vicious killer from an old horror film, she crept down the stairs with utter confidence in her actions. Jack could do nothing but stare, stare as Bettina reached from behind and pull out a kitchen knife, his mum's favourite. She had been planning this. The Psychopath! Now she was finishing the job. Jack's vision was becoming darker by second and all the he could hear was the muffled sound of his sister's last remarks. "It's okay now Jack. Everything is going to be fine." Then the darkness enclosed him.

As Bettina pushed him down the stairs, Jack was certain he saw her smile. This had been her plan all along, seclude him, trap him, make it look like an accident. She had been so innocent, you couldn’t have guessed that it would turn out like this. They had been on their way out for dinner, their first date, she had tricked him into going down first and before he knew it, he was flying down the stairs, thumping each step with another part of his body. It was a staircase that you would see in an old house, curling down through a spiral into the ground, the staircase to hell. Jack knew this wouldn’t end well, if he was lucky a broken leg and maybe a few cracked ribs, fractured arm, internal bruising. There was a crash as he finally reached the bottom, he winced with every move he attempted to make to get away. Bettina was coming down the stairs now, starring at him, smiling wide with her pearly, white teeth. -LARA

Shit! Still having an iron grip on the rail, she pushed harder on his back, blood seeped out the hole where her heel was still situated. CRACK, his shoulder became dislocated and he continued to tumble down the stairs.

"As Bettina pushed him down the stairs, Jack was certain he saw her smile." The pain was instant, blood oozing from his head. His vision burring, Jack tried to steady his thoughts. Was this an accident? He had known Bettina all his life, they were friends, at least he thought they were, until he saw the white, perfect teeth of Bettina glistening in crazed saliva. At least that's what he thought he saw. Jack did a lot of thinking. He particularly thought about Bettina. What she was doing, if she might need her help, when she would be coming over. Jack tried to protect Bettina, except sometimes, Bettina didn't want his protection. He head thumped as he watched her walk down the stairs, a perfectly innocent 'O' shaped mouth forming. "Oh Jack!" she cried. "Are you okay?" But Bettina didn't sound like she usually did, her voice was high pitched and squeaky as if she had been punched in the throat. Jack saw a glint of anger in her eyes, at least he thought he did. You see Jack wasn't really sure of anything right about now, he wasn't sure if he wanted to be near Bettina, he wasn't sure if perhaps she was more dangerous that he had given her credit for, perhaps he had just walked into a trap. Or perhaps, the smile he, thought, he saw was nothing more than a thought. Jack tried to open his mouth, to call for help, but all that came out was the gurgling of blood at the back of his throat. Bettina laughed, a crazed kind of laugh, one that seemed to echo off the walls and all around the house. At least, Jack thought it sounded crazed, but maybe it was just the ringing in his ears. He had to sit down, he moved to the bottom coughing and spluttering. Bettina stood and watched, not moving as if she wanted to see him struggle. At least, that's what Jack though he saw, but he couldn't be sure, his vision was blurring as his need for oxygen became too much. Finally, Bettina started walking towards him as if she were ready to hit him on the back, to help him breath again. But she said next to him, and watched the life drain out of him one cough at a time. She watched his back slump, his face turn blue and his eyes roll back in his head. She watched it all, just like she watched him fall down the stairs, just like she smiled as the sound of his head hitting the floorboards echoed through the room and just as she laughed her crazed laugh when she knew Jack's fate. He was gone.

Look what Bettina has just done!”. “MAN UP SON” his father thunders. Scared and alone he searches for the kind heart of his mother, her warm hug, her willingness to protect him to love him. Instead he finds her calm voice covering the instruments of our demise as she says, “Don’t worry she probably just likes you”. Too often malice and pain are confused with love, emotions confused with weakness, where does the line stat and end, no one knows, we lost sight of this years ago. Jack walked up to Bettina “Why would you do that?” he asks he expected to find reason to understand why she did this and why people do what they do instead she replies, “I don’t know I just did”. He leaves confused how could she just do that for no reason there has to be a reason he thinks. Isn’t it just ironic he thought he was answerless.

As Bettina pushed him down the stairs, Jack was certain he saw her smile. Bettina quickly ran up the next flight of stairs calling all of her men to stop jack before he could reach her. She had five minutes before the chopper would make the rooftop. Jack slowly pulled himself to his feet and pushed through the pain, the blood pouring out of the bullet hole in his shoulder. Slowly stumbling up the stairs he paused, and heard footsteps, they were getting louder and louder. He waited hidden behind the wall. They were only a metre from him, he turned his shoulder and two loud gunshots awoke the hotel as the two lifeless bodies hit the floor. The hotel was now filled with Bettina's guards searching for Jack. Jack quickly ran and grabbed the magazines out of the pockets of the two men he just killed and attached a suppressor to his pistol. He hopped to the next flight of stairs and started his ascent. He was only 3 floors away from the rooftop and he knew that he didn’t have much time left. He got to the second last floor and was met by six guards, all were killed before a bullet shell hit the floor. Slowly losing blood Jack was growing weaker and weaker. He called for back-up and was told they are sweeping the lower levels of the building and working their way up. Gunshots filled the hotel with the forces taking all of the remainder of Bettina's guards, Jack was messaged by the squad leader that he was by himself, they couldn't get to him for 2 minutes and by then Bettina would be long gone, he had to do this himself. Jack got to the rooftop and peaked out the door, Bettina looked to be by herself waiting on the helipad.

He walked out scouting around him looking for any guards that could kill him. He walked five feet before a gunshot was heard from an opposing building and the bullet struck him in the leg. Bettina turned and saw Jack lying on the ground clutching at his knee, she walked over, stood over him and told him he was slow close but never would have stopped her. The helicopter was coming in and Bettina turned and said "Nice battle we fought but we will never see each other again". She walked and hopped into the helicopter. Using his last amounts of energy Jack grabbed his pistol and shot at the pilot, killing him and sending the helicopter in a spiral into the neighbouring building exploding and killing both. Jack lied in his own blood, the rest of the forces reached the rooftop only to see Jack's lifeless body, lying in a pool of blood.

A heard rushed from all the doors that had flung open. One by one each student had rushed eagerly to get to the gate. Jack had his backpack strapped on one shoulder, walking with a slight hang towards one side. He had reached the top of the railing when all of a sudden his feet caught from underneath him coming towards a hard impact to the cold cement stairs "as Bettina pushed him down the stairs, jack was certain he saw her smile". Jack had tumbled towards his death, what he imagined it would of felt like anyway. He was trampled over many times before any one had payed any attention to his beaten up and stepped on body facing the ground. It was jack's best friend Amy who had stopped the stampede of children from crushing his body anymore and helping him to his feet. "how did you manage this one Jackie boy?" she said with a chuckle. "who do you think ?" he replied, Amy flopped his arm around her as she rolled her eyes making their way to the bus lines.

Amy stared at jacks legs admiring all the bruises and cuts that had formed. "I honestly don’t understand how you let her do this, you know ?" she said with anger " you're lucky I don’t do anything because you know id love to give her a taste of her own medicine" she said clenching her fists. He replied "She only does it to get a reaction out me" he assured her " If it ever got to bad, you know I would report her" looking down towards his blooded up knee. Out of the corner of jacks eye he could see Bettina burning holes through the side of his head. Amy stood up without warning and made her way over to Bettina's gang. Jack called out silently to Amy, but nothing could stop her now, Amy's forehead had a warm glow of red boiling up when Mr. Charles stopped her in her path, " Now Miss Everly what are you such in a hurry for? You know there isn't to be any running during bus lines." Amy started to choke up "um um I was just um" when her bus number was called " Sorry sir, um got to go that’s my bus" she rushed through as fast as she could, walking off back to jack.
