It refers to the style of performance which occurred during the reign and death of  Elizabeth I. Elizabethan theatre saw the first professional actors who belonged to the touring groups and performed plays of non religious themes.

The first purpose built theatre was built in London in the year 1576 other theatres soon London became a booming industry for theatre, daily theatre shows were a regular occurrence. The most celebrated and popular playwright period was Shakespeare, whose work went global he was extremely popular for themes of history,romance,revenge,comedy and tragedy.

Hamlet-

Hamlet’s obsession with honour leads him to avenge his father’s death. He wanted Claudius to suffer the consequences for his actions.

Macbeth-

Macbeth preferred to honour and prove his manhood to his wife rather than give loyalty to his country and king.

Romeo and Juliet-

Romeo and Juliet honour their families as well as their commitment and promises to each other.

Othello-

Othello is honoured due to his service for his people, the people of Venice, where he continuously put his life in danger for his people’s good.

Virtues:

Courage, trust, patience and hope

Trust- example from Othello

The belief that the character Desdemona has tainted his honour increases Othello’s mistrust leading to misplaced trust in the character Lago, resulting in him killing Desdemona.

Courage- example from Romeo and Julie

Juliets courage is revealed when she chooses to take the potion from friar Lawerence.

Hanging:

A common punishment for serious crimes such as,murder,treason or piracy. Public hangings were sometimes held as a dererrent.

Beheading:

Reserved for high treason and certain nobles convicted of serious crimes

Whipping:

Used as a punishment for lesser crimes often carried out publicly.

Fines: offenders would be faced with a certain amount of money to pay depending on the crime

And pressing:

The accused would be laid down and heavy stones or weights placed upon them until they confessed or died.
