Throughout the novel Paper Towns there is an overall issue about mental illness, mainly depression. This issue is mainly present within Margo. Her personality, what she says and how she acts gives way to her true emotions. In many parts of the novel Margo acts as if she is fine, and that nothing is wrong with her at all. She mainly acts this way around her friends in school and when she is with her own family. However, when she is alone with Quentin, Margo says things that make Quentin feel as if something is very, very wrong.

Mayo Clinic states that some of the main symptoms of depression are a feeling of hopelessness, social isolation, and thoughts of suicide. Within the story Margo presents two of these symptoms majorly and the other can be inferred by what she says. Within the first part of the story Margo plans revenge on people who have 'betrayed' her, but it could be seen as her isolating herself. She leaves a note for one friend that says "A message from Margo Roth Spiegelman: Your friendship with her - it sleeps with the fishes," (Green 42), this quote helps prove that Margo is showing signs of depression, because she is shutting out her friends. Margo also shows signs of depression because she talks about her last string breaking, the one that was keeping her going. It can be inferred that now that this string is broken she has no purpose in continuing on with her life.

Within the book Green's central theme is about identity and how changing one's own identity will not affect others. Green proves this theme with the relationship between Margo and Quentin. When Quentin is around Margo he tries to act confident because Margo had said "Here's a tip: you're cute when you're confident and less when you're not," (Green 57), he thought that there relationship would change if he changed himself. Shockingly, there relationship didn't change. If someone were to change there identity for another it would not change how the one person feels about the person changing.

The image chosen for this element relates to the theme because people change there identity based on who the are around. Exactly as the guy in the picture is doing, seeing who he shall be to get through the day. Green is trying to show with his theme that no matter how much one changes it will not affect the people around them.

As I have read I have learned what it is like to be alone and feel like no one is there when I need them. In part two of the novel Quentin feels very alone for once in his life. Since Margo left him he feels as if he has no purpose. His friends Ben and Radar try to help him get through this hard time however, Quentin still feels alone. I have learned about how Quentin is feeling by reading his emotions and seeing how different he is from the beginning of the book until now. I choose the picture above because it reminds me of Quentin. While Margo is gone Quentin spends his time searching for her and waiting for her to return to him.
