Bolivar named himself dictator of Peru in 1824, and the harsh changes he made to Gran Colombia caused larger rebellions. When the first war of independence failed, Giuseppe Garibaldi took another thousands of soldiers to Naples. Victor Emmanuel II was able to proclaim the Kingdom of Italy in 1861 when Garibaldi handed over the land. Italy later joined Austria's war as part of their army, but they were quickly defeated.
