The teacher will ask the student what the name and sound of each letter is and circle the letters that the student correctly identified the sound of and underline the letters that the student correctly identified the name of. The teacher can use the same sheet, but use different colored highlighters each time they test the student to see their progress.

These fun videos can be used to introduce students to the letter of the week. Students will listen and then sing along repeating the letter name, sounds and words that begin with that letter. The teacher can then use flashcards to test students on what they learned in which they show pictures of things that begin with "a" as well as pictures of other things that begin with other letters. Students have to choose the pictures that start with the /a/ sound and put them on the pocket chart. This can also be done with objects in lieu of pictures. Students can also do this as a whole class activity in which students perform an action when they hear a word that beings with the letter sound of the week (they can jump, hop, stand up, wave, etc.)

The teacher can read a book to students that focusses on the letter of the week. Students can identify which words begin with the letter by circling the words they see and they can also identify which words begin with the sound of letter of the week by listening to the story and making a motion when they hear the word. For example, the teacher might teach "f" and put her hands together and move them like a fish and then later have students make this motion when they hear sounds in the story that begin with the /f/ sound.

One of the ways that we can help our students is to make sure that the information is culturally relevant. We can do this by reading words that students should know. For example, we can use words for family members since all students have a family or words for common pets that all students may have heard of. Additionally, we can relate the sounds to words in the student's home languages. For example, we can relate /b/ to the /b/ sound in the word bailar, since it is the same sound in Spanish when pronounced at the beginning of a word. I can also use bilingual flashcards that contain words that have the same beginning sound. For example: map and mapa have the same beginning sound.

Reading stories aloud is another way to accommodate ELLs. I could find a story that has a lot of alliteration or specific fun books about the entire alphabet. The teachers at the school where I worked had a song and a poster for each letter that included many words that began with the letter of the week. Hearing the song, seeing the poster and having a story read to ELL students is very helpful and is a part of UDL.

Preteaching vocabulary and and stimulating students' content knowledge before reading can also help. For example, if a story has a lot of new words, we can first talk about things that relate to the story. We can ask "Have you ever been to the zoo? What animals did you see?" before reading about a story that has many animals. We can then preteach the vocabulary and also make sure to show lots of visuals to make sure that the ELL students understand.

Zoo-Phonics would be great to use with special needs students since it includes mnemonics, has a kinesthetic aspect, is multimodal and concrete. For example, special education students with audio processing issues will be able to access this content via the body movements and animal pictures. Students with visual processing problems, will be able to access the content via hearing the sounds and doing the kinesthetic movements. The program itself is designed to reach students of all different learning types, so doesn't need to be modified, however it can be. For example, this can be done in small groups or one-on-one depending on the student's IEP requirements. Additionally, students can be given extra time for Zoo-Phonics or it can be used as a supplement to the regular phonics curriculum. Finally, students can use the mnemonics or be reminded of them to finish assignments or do other work involving phonics or writing. All of this, would benefit general education students, as well.
