The 13 American Colonies were controlled by the British. The Americans were angry over increasing British taxation to fund things like foreign wars. The Americans argued for "No Taxation Without Representation", meaning that they wanted to be represented for government decisions. After the British imposed taxes on tea, many Americans began protests. The Boston Massacre in 1770 brought tensions to an all-time high, and American patriot groups banded together to combat the British.

The Boston Tea Party occurred on December 16, 1773. American Patriots took aim at the British Tea Act by throwing chests of tea into the water. This was seen as a massive show of protest to British taxes. This event inspired many patriots to band together in solidarity. The British consequently passed the Intolerable Acts in 1774 in order to punish the Massachusetts colonists that staged the incident.

The Battle of Bunker Hill took place in 1775. The British took a major victory and captured the Charlestown Peninsula. Many future battles would prove to be stalemates.
