What is a compound adjective? A compound adjective is an adjective that is made up of multiple individual words. 

Usually compound adjectives the words are connected by a hyphen or hyphens when used as an adjective. Words like absent-minded and happy-go-lucky are examples of compound adjectives.

Compound adjectives in a sentence: 
  • This is a four-foot table.
  • Daniella is a part-time worker.
  • This is an all-too-common error.
  • Beware of the green-eyed monster.
  • He is a cold-blooded man.
  • I love this brightly-lit room!
  • He is an obedient and well-behaved dog.

A relative pronoun is a word that introduces a dependent (or relative) clause and connects it to an independent clause.

There are only a few relative pronouns in the English language. The most common are which, that, whose, whoever, whomever, who, and whom. In some situations, the words what, when, and where can also function as relative pronouns.

Some examples of relative pronouns:
  • The man who went to the store drives a pickup truck. 
  • The house was built by a man, whom many consider to be a great architect. 
  • The plant that is on the table has died.


Pronouns: Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns. We often use them to avoid repeating the nouns that they refer to. Pronouns have different forms for the different ways we use them.
