This project was done by myself, Christopher Golter. I decided to visit an area of Salt Lake City that Google Maps designates as "Wright Circle," between Orange St. (West) and S 1250 W (East) as well as 200 S (North) and 500 S (South). It is on the west side of the city along I-80 not too far from the airport. I did not have too many concerns before I went despite never having been to this particular part of Salt Lake City. Although certainly not the most wealthy or "nice" part of SLC, I never felt uncomfortable or threatened in any way to make myself concerned. I didn't have any real interactions with any neighborhood members, as any people I encountered on the sidewalk etc. basically ignored me, as is typical in American cities for the most part. The neighborhood contains mostly small houses, with several of the properties showing neglect. This wasn't just limited to the residential parts of the neighborhood though. The industrial parks on the west side of the neighborhood were not in great shape, containing eye sores like disorganized scrapyards, warehouses, and abandoned buildings with graffiti on them. This concerned me as these things were only a few blocks away from Edison Elementary School. Definitely not the types of properties that most parents want their young children possibly being exposed to. That said, the neighborhood does have some good things going for it. If families and kids wish to be active they can either go to Sherwood Park in the center of the neighborhood, a spacious public park that also has 3 baseball diamonds, as well as the Lied Boy's & Girls club in the southeast corner. Looking back, the Wright Circle neighborhood has a good foundation for rehabilitation, including convenience stores, gas stations, parks, a school, and even a few businesses. If the neighborhood can work to improve some of the blight and neglect, then it is absolutely possible for substantial improvement in a relatively short time. I would be comfortable with going back here again in the future and seeing if and how things may have changed.
