Hollywood Blacklist Background 99014455 https://padlet.com/99014263/9vyvstm9vn7b/wish/206379050 The blacklist started in 1947 when Hollywood entertainment professionals were being accused of creating communist inspired work. The Hollywood ten which is a group of writers, directors, and producers who hid information regarding whether or not they are a part of the communist party to the House Committee On Un-American Activities. They were put in prison in 1950 and were "blacklisted". The Hollywood ten consisted of Alvah Bessie, Herbert Biberman, Lester Cole, Edward Dmytryk, Ring Lardner, Jr., John Howard Lawson, Albert Maltz, Sam Ornitz, Robert Adrian Scott, and Dalton Trumbo. This was the start to this list and eventually added up to about 500 people black or grey-listed. They grey-list was what the were placed on when they were suspected of being a part of the communist party. This list appeared in 1951. Once on the list, its very difficult to find work.

In 1947 with the start of the soviet powerhouse rising 10 members of the Hollywood film industry publicly denounced the tactics employed by the House Un-American Activities Committee. An investigative committee of the U.S. House of Representatives was launched on the ten members. These screenwriters and directors, who became known as the Hollywood Ten. These members received jail sentences and were banned from working for the major Hollywood studios. Besides the Hollywood Ten, other members of the film industry with alleged communist ties were later banned from working for the big movie studios also. The Hollywood blacklist finally came to an end in the 1960's.

In 1957, he sued a company called AWARE, one of the many private organisations making quick money at the time by publicizing the names of supposed left wing supporters in the US film industry. However, the one who may have sealed the deal would be Kirk Douglass with his work as Spartacus in the same year.

Hollywood off-camera 99031756 https://padlet.com/99014263/9vyvstm9vn7b/wish/206383798 The investigation of Hollywood radicals by the House on Un-American Activities Committee  in 1947 and 1951 was a continuation of pressures first exerted in the late 1930s and early 1940s by the Dies Committee and State Senator Jack Tenney's California Joint Fact-finding Committee on Un-American Activities. HUAC charged that Communists had established a significant base in the dominant medium of mass culture. Communists were said to be placing subversive messages into Hollywood films and discriminating against unsympathetic colleagues. A further concern was that Communists were in a position to place negative images of the United States in films that would have wide international distribution. Totally ignored in the hysteria generated by HUAC were the realities of the Hollywood studio system of the 1930s and 1940s.

The citizens who were blacklisted are people who refused to answer questions regarding their affiliation with the Communist Party. Some of these include producers, directors, and screenwriters. Since this list occurred around 1940's and 1950's, some of the people who were blacklisted include: Lester Cole, Adrian Scott, Dalton Trumbo, and many others. Through this process came the Hollywood Ten. The Hollywood Ten were a group of men who spent time in prison for being on the blacklist. Most were never employed in Hollywood again. Many blacklist entries were merely rumors about the citizens.
