The Three Kingdoms period in Korea is named after the three independent nation-states that rose during the time period of 57 BCE-668 CE. Historians have gathered the most information of this period from large tombs that were created to hold and honor their elite deceased.
One of those tombs held this extravagant gold crown ornamented with jade and "the tall, branching forms rising from the crown's periphery resemble trees and antlers" (Stokstad, Cothren) which, as we learned earlier, are symbolic of shamanism or animal spiritualism. That combined with the jade, which was believed to preserve life, create a powerful ritual object to be placed into a tomb.

The Unified Silla Period is marked by the flourishing of Buddhism in Korea from China. It was during this time that monuments, such as this Seated Shakyamuni Buddha, were sculpted and erected for public admiration and reverence. The cave-temple where this sculpture is located, Seokguram, was "the greatest monument of the Unified Silla period" (Stokstad, Cothren) inspiration for it was drawn from both cave-temples in India and depictions of the Buddha from China such as "the full, taut forms, diaphanous drapery, and anatomical details of the chest" (Stokstad, Cothren). It was natural for inspiration to be drawn from India and China as the former is the source of the faith and the latter Korea's source of it.

Goryeo Dynasty

The Goryeo Dynasty is known for the time after eliminating the nation-states that arose in the Three Kingdoms period, which was "a period of courtly refinement" (Stokstad, Cothren) as seen in this elegant celadon-glazed ceramic bottle. A bottle with this high level of craftsmanship would find its home in the court, noble's homes, or to prominent Buddhist clergy. As described in the previous timeline section, this style of celadon-glazing originated from China but evolved to showcase distinctly Korean attributes such as the designs of swans and bamboo in this bottle that were created by using underglaze in contrasting colors.

Koreans experiment with Chinese celadon glazes

The following piece is a Korean celadon-glazed ceramic bottle. Koreans began to use this way of glazing stoneware in the 8th and 9th centuries. This was the product of influence from the Chinese, who had invented celadon glazes in the 1st century. But, Korean celadon pottery would come to strike out on its own. Such as through the uniquely Korean invention of "inlaid decoration, in which black and white slips, or finely ground clays, were inlaid into the intaglio lines of decorative elements incised or stamped in the clay body, creating underglaze designs in contrasting colors" (Stokstad, Cothren). This isn't an uncommon occurrence -- much of a culture's art begins with inspiration from another until it comes to take its own form.

Buddhism travels from China to Korea

Buddhism was introduced to Korea from China in 372-384 CE. By 527 CE, it became the official religion of the Silla Kingdom. This new sweep of religion also brought its art. According to the textbook, "at first Buddhist art in Korea imitated Chinese examples" (Stokstad, Cothren) but eventually, as we also see in celadon-glazing, Koreans would come to strike out on their own and create Buddhist art that is distinctly their own. This is seen in Bodhisattva Seated in Meditation where a bodhisattva is featured with unique Korean aesthetic qualities such as elegant drapery folds and a trilobed crown.
