In the election of 1800, in which Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr received an equal number of electoral votes and Hamilton was the force behind Jefferson’s controversial victory in the Senate vote. Hamilton noted that “the mode of appointment of the Chief Magistrate of the United States is almost the only part of the system, of any consequence, which has escaped without severe censure, or which has received the slightest mark of approbation from its opponents.” He emphasized that “Nothing was more to be desired than that every practicable obstacle should be opposed to cabal, intrigue, and corruption.”Resolved, as the sense of the Legislature, that the following amendments ought to be incorporated into the Constitution of the United States as a necessary safeguard in the choice of a President and Vice President against pernicious dissensions as the most eligible mode of obtaining a full and fair expression of the public will in such election." - itshamiltime.com

-Necessarilly Hamilton strongly disagreed to the methods that went into making this amendment possible. He proposed to create a new version that would incorporate his own view points to improve the flaws and more emphasis on choice for the elector.

In short, having this amendment back in the Eighteen hundreds proved to be very effective. Voting for two candidates seemed like a fair cinch for many people to get around from only having to vote for one candidate.
