With children around and cold seasons happening so frequently, we now use washable (old school) hankerchiefs and we keep them in a pretty jar in our main rooms where people might need a kleenex. Its been great and we havent had to resort to buying disposable kleenex.

Kitchen- Dry goods

We like to shop where we can fill up our jars with nuts, cereals, seeds, rice, etc. our favorite place to support is Bare Market, but there are also many bulk barns and other bulk stores where one can refill their containers. For some, jars can be heavy to carry. Some other options can be cloth bags that can be tied to carry dry goods, as well as the black plastic take out containers that were popular in the last few years, these we reuse as well!

Yoga/Pilates mat

My wife teaches Pilates and found these great natural cork and rubbers mats for her pilates studio! If you are looking for a plastic free alternative to yoga/Pilates mats, the Canadian woman owned company scoria sells these in different thicknesses. My wife uses 6mm ones to ease the joints on the floor during her exercises. They even come packaged/shipped without any plastic.

“Making homemade snacks”… is not easy!

I have a good story about snacks. As you might know, Cristina and I have a 6 years old daughter: Lou. She is not only teaching us patience. She is also teaching us how early we get used to consume specific products. Low waste snacks is not an easy one. Finding something different for snack once your child gets bored of fruits or vegetables is not that easy isn’t it? A few weeks ago at the store, Lou wanted a Yop! yogourt but it comes in plastic. After checking the receipt online, Cristina and I told Lou that we wouldn’t buy one at the store and we bought a can of coconut milk and a glass jar of yaourt. Lou cried. When we came home, I mixed everything and we put it in a cleaned Yop! bottle. Guess what? Lou asked for 3 refills!

I find it interesting that the shape, colour and size (the design or narrative) of the Yop! is what makes a 6 years old like her low waste upcycled ZWYOP!
