"FIX: A Strategic Approach to Writing
and Revision for Students With
Learning Disabilities" is the article that I chose to read to grow my understanding of HLPs. FIX is a pneumonic. It stands for Focus on essay elements, Identify problems, and eXecute changes (Sherman & De La Paz, 2015). Each phase within the pneumonic is assigned a color and its own steps to helps students to improve their learning. In order to achieve student independence for using in the FIX method, teacher can utilize SRSD (Sherman & De La Paz, 2015).

The article details how to use FIX and SRSD in a collaborative way in order to effectively set students up for good writing. This success is facilitated through clear instruction, opportunities for self monitoring, and repetition of concepts until mastery is achieved.

FIX: using three colors of pens/highlighters or three colors of paper, work through one step at a time. For example, on the red piece of paper, a student would address the prompts that fall under the "Focus on essay elements" step of FIX (Sherman & De La Paz, 2015). This step includes assessing things like answering the prompt appropriately and setting the paper up for success.
SRSD: Before using FIX independently, teaching SRSD over the span of a number of weeks will set students up for success. This process breaks down the elements of strong writing one at a time. Reinforcing these concepts through classwork, group work, and lessons in class will help students to gain an understanding of what it means to do something like "delete or rewrite specific text to make meaningful changes" on examples, this way, when asked to do this on their own writing they are able to revise appropriately (Sherman & De La Paz, 2015).

This method of instruction was interesting to me because it utilized two different methods of scaffolding. Building up to complex concepts like effectively self assessing your writing requires several steps to fully break down the process. This step by step break down will eventually add up to paint the big picture but in a non overwhelming manner. I saw much value in this method. Building confidence in the small areas with scaffolding is apart of the unravelling of an even larger concept; One in which students will gain the ability to effectively work independently with a number of critical thinking approaches. By taking these steps, students will be guided at a pace that is appropriate for them and provided with feedback at each stage, ensuring growth in the right direction.

This article opened my eyes to the degree of instruction that is required to drive home a complex concept for students with disabilities. FIX and SRSD are two examples of how effective learning can take place with dedication to the process.

Knowing that HLPs are proven to work, I will have a framework that I will be able to utilize in my classroom. In order to maintain inclusivity in my classroom, I will ensure that as I maintain this framework, I consciously check on my students with learning disabilities so that they can get the help that they need when they need it and can continue to grow with the class.
