This art piece conveys the upbringing that Marji had to endure by both the government and society. The hands symbolize the government; they constrain Marji by these puppet strings and force a future that an ideal woman should have, being either a wife or a mother. Following the 1979 Islamic revolution, the government forced women to wear their hijabs and present themselves in a conservative manner. The eyes represent society; during this time period, there was a certain standard by which women had to present themselves. Every move that Marji made had to be within the box designed for girls just like her. Yet Marji wanted to be in control of her life and her own actions. There was a part of her that needed to rebel; though she had many constraints and part of her own world was falling apart, there was a part of her that longed for individuality. The knife symbolizes this feeling, this need to break free from the constraints and the future as a woman that was expected of her. She wanted the choice to be whoever she wanted to be.

Marjane Satrapi felt as though the world was against her. Though she was religious she also wanted the choice to chose how she expressed her faith. The mandated veil and new societal standards suppressed her creative expression need as a child. These past memories and the importance of growing up during the time of the the Iranian revolution was extremely personal. The drive to share her story came from Satrapi being "an exiled person" she states that "like any exiled person I always go to the past." Though she lives a very different life she cannot forget that past; her past is what shaped her into the person she is today. The things that impact her"are the things that (she) has grown up with".

Dear Reader,

The graphic memoir Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi talks about many different experiences she had growing up in Iran, like the Iranian revolution, and the war between Iran and Iraq. But in this presentation, we will be talking about how the Iranian revolution and how wearing the veil affected Marji’s upbringing. The veil played a huge role in Marji’s upbringing because she and other women in Iran were forced to wear the veil. This caused 100,000 women to protest against the veil in Tehran, which ultimately led to death. Marji throughout the memoir was always controlled by society and was very able to break through the box that society put her in. Through the genres in the padlet we are able to talk about the subjects in more detail.
