“The beginning of the war”

Death though inevitable 

Creates this ripple 

hitting the lives of the living

Death poses the everlasting question

Why?

Why did he have to die?

Why now?

Why not three years from now?

Unanswered questions coated the insides of my brain?

These questions like knives cut the strings of my faith

And it began to waiver

Everything at once and just like that 

the ripple turned into a wave

Hitting me all at once 

Caught off guard with no life vest to help

For I was truly lost

My mother sang a bitter song

Like a damn broken in two

And the word ok seemed to be planets away

I was bare

Vulnerable

As my life fell apart around me 

Yet I 

was at a standstill

Dissociate

Be the astronaut floating through space

Alone

But at peace

Yet peace never lasts

Like a nice dream, it visits

For a second 

And reality grabs you by the throat

Never letting you forget the 

deep waters you are in

The graphic memoir Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi talks about many different experiences she had growing up in Iran, like the Iranian revolution, and the war between Iran and Iraq. But in this presentation, we will be talking about how the Iranian revolution and how wearing the veil affected Marji’s upbringing. The veil played a huge role in Marji’s upbringing because she and other women in Iran were forced to wear the veil. This caused 100,000 women to protest against the veil in Tehran, which ultimately led to death. Marji throughout the memoir was always controlled by society and was very able to break through the box that society put her in. Through the genres in the padlet we are able to talk about the subjects in more detail.
