That dragon happened to be a sacred one of Ares, as well as being Ares' son. In order for him to live and be "purified" Cadmus was to serve Ares as a slave for the next 8 years. At the end of the 8 years, as a reconciliation Ares gave Cadmus his blessing to marry his daughter Harmonia. When Cadmus followed the advise of Athena, he planted the dragon teeth in the earth and fully armed warriors sprang up. In order to defeat them, he threw rocks at them to make them quarrel and kill each other.
