The first stage in Erikson's stages of development is Trust vs Mistrust. This stage is from birth to 12-18 months. In this time a "baby develops a sense of whether the world is a good and safe place" (Table 1.3).

As a baby I developed trust early on because of my consistent and safe environment. I do not know of any crisis I faced that young, but I grew up in a very loving home which allowed me to develop trust. In this stage babies develop a core belief about trust. They learn if they will trust people and the environment they are in.

Autonomy vs Shame and Doubt is the second stage of Erikson's Development. This stage is from 12-18 months to 3 years. In this time a "child develops a balance of independence and self-sufficiency over shame and doubt" (Table 1.3). In this stage potty training occurs and myself and many others went through shame and doubt in the process. With accidents came the shame. With time and practice we learn and gain a sense of independence which resolved this crisis. In this stage I feel that children learn they have control over their actions.

In the third stage of Erikson's Development, Initiative vs Guilt occurs. This stage lasts from age 3-6 years. In this time a "child develops initiative while trying new activities and is not overwhelmed by guilt" (Table 1.3). As a child I participated in gymnastics. After a short amount of time I confessed to my mom I wanted to quit and after doing so I moved on to a new sport. I was not filled with shame that I quit something like I would have if I quit something now, I simply moved on to another activity. In this stage I feel that kids explore themselves and learn the things they are interested in.

Industry vs Inferiority is the 4th stage of Erikson's stages of development. This stage lasts from age 6 to puberty. In this time a "child must learn skills of the culture or face feelings of incompetence" (Table 1.3). As a child after exploring different sports and activities I tried volleyball and was very successful at it which developed my sense of industry. A crisis I faced was being inferior when changes schools and learning the amount of competition I was going to face. I overcame this by doing private lessons and improving my skills. I feel that in this stage children develop a sense of pride and start mapping out their wants and dreams. They learn more about society and become familiar with life situations.

Stage 5: Identity vs Identity Confusion

The fifth stage of Erikson's development is Identity vs Identity Confusion. This stage lasts from puberty to young adulthood. In this time "adolescents must determine sense of self (Who am I) or experience confusion about roles" (Table 1.3). A crisis I recently went through was trying to determine who I was and what I wanted to be. The decision of what major you want to choose and just simply what you want to do with your life is confusing and stressful. I overcame this crisis by exploring my options and trying out an assistant teaching position which I ended up loving. I feel that in this stage adolescents are faced with social norms of identity and feeling overwhelmed by fitting in, so they question themselves.

Intimacy vs Isolation is the sixth stage of Erikson's stages of development. This stage occurs in young adulthood. In this stage a "person seeks to make commitments to others or may suffer from isolation and self-absorption" (Table 1.3). A crisis that I have faced was having a relationship then facing a break up and isolation. I overcame this by surrounding myself with loved ones. I feel that this stage is exploring personal relationships and trying to build a life with another person. It is also facing challenges like Isolation and being alone

In the seventh stage of Erikson's stages of development, Generativity vs Stagnation occurs. This stage is in middle adulthood. In this time "mature adult is concerned with establishing and guiding the next generation or else feels impoverishment" (Table 1.3). As an assistant teacher I feel that I engage in Generativity when I am helping the next generation. I feel that this stage is about individulats in their next stage of life when they start a family. They learn about themselves as a parental figure and about creating a life.

The last stage of Erikson's stages of development is Integrity vs Despair. This occurs in late adulthood. In this time an "elderly person achieves acceptance of own life, allowing acceptance of death, or else despairs over inability to achieve life. I have not yet reached this stage but I feel like when I do I will be able to look back and accept my life. In this stage I feel that one is able to look back on all their years and either be happy they experienced the things they did, or regret not doing certain things. Those who look back and feel satisfied with the life they lived are filled with integrity, but those who look back and have regrets are filled with despair.
