elements of christian influence and pagan influence

When you look into the background of Grendel you see that he is the decedent of Kain. Kain and Able are brothers found in the story of the bible. Kain Kills his brother Able because he is jealous of him. When Beowulf is getting ready to battle Grendel, he says, "May the Divine Lord in His wisdom grant the glory of victory to whichever side he sees fit." After he has cut off Grendel's arm and shoulder he remarks,""If God had not helped me, the outcome would have been quick and fatal." "He adds that the 'Lord of Men' was the one who 'allowed him to behold' the sword on the wall which he seized as the instrument of his salvation."Fifty years later, when faced with another dragon, Beowulf knows that he will probably be killed when he faces the dragon. But he says,"Because of my right ways, the Ruler of mankind need never blame me when the breath leaves my body." Although Beowulf's funeral is pagan in origin, it does celebrate life of "a gracious and fair minded
King", which mirrors the Christian view of Jesus.

Cooper Garbe

Revenge: After Grendel's mother finds out that someone from Heorot has killed her son she becomes furious and takes the trophy from Heorot. Beowulf fallows her into the the lake and ends up swimming for hours and she has a big advantage because they battle in her own territory. As she draws Beowulf into the cave her revenge peaks because this is the man who killed her son. Despite all this Beowulf's amazing abilities as a warriors defeat her. He slashes her neck and takes with him her head and Grendel's arm back to Heorot as a sign of him being victorious.

Loyalty: After the battle with she-wolf the Geats (Beowulf's people) waited for him at the top of the lake and they hadn't ever lost any hope for their leader. "They thanked God that their leader had come back unharmed. The Geats carried his helmet and mail shirt."( Raffel 37). Another example of loyalty from the text is that even though Hrothgar is not actually Beowulf's lord, Beowulf still feels very loyal to him. It is this relationship of loyalty that ultimately keeps Heorot safe and keeps the forces of chaos away from the people town heorot

Bryan Jasso
