While I read these parts, it was a whirlwind of emotions. I was shocked when Yanek and the other Prisoners were about to die in the gas chamber, and I was relieved when water came out of the shower heads. I was happy for the little boy when the others risked their lives to give him his Bar Mitzvah. Along the way they stop by a village with Czech people, they help by giving small amounts of food to the prisoners.

Yankek- All these people are being so generous. With all the hungry prisoners, I wasn't able to get any scraps of food yet. I wasn't going to survive if I didn't get any food. Who knew how long it would take to get to the camp. I need to get the food. I need to survive.

Czech People- This war better be over soon. I can't stand seeing these innocent humans, being treated like animals. All I can do is give them the scraps from our table. They probably think I am a god for doing such a small favor. I can't even imagine what these Jews have gone through.

This is in the pov of the boy the Bar Mitzvah was for.

 “We have a boy who is thirteen today,” says my father, lying on the wooden shelf next to me. “Who will stand with him?” 
        I don’t know why he bothers. I’m not expecting anybody to risk their lives to stand in at a random boys Bar Mitzvah, when they could be using those precious moments sleeping and gaining their energy. I told him I’m ok with not having my Bar Mitzvah. I don’t think it’s worth it having it here in the dirty barracks. But my father is stubborn, and thinks that I should have the opportunity to become a man, no matter what happens. 
      As I thought, no one says anything.
     “Are there not ten men here who will make a minyan with us?” he asks. I wonder if he thinks that there actually are.
     “Be quiet.” says someone from another shelf.
     “Go to sleep.”
     “How can you care about such things in a place like this?”
      “It is even more important here and now,” my father says, and I can see he is getting a little desperate.
      “Tomorrow he will be dead. We all will. None of it matters anymore.”
That shuts him up, and I’m a little stunned too. I hope whoever said that is wrong, that we will make it through this war and survive.
     Suddenly, another voice speaks out, from our own shelf. “I’ll do it.” 
The corners of my father’s mouth raise as he waits to see if more people will volunteer. And more did. One by one, different men spoke out saying they’d do it with us, until there were ten.
      We get up from our shelves onto the dirty floor of the barracks, and my father starts the prayers for my ceremony. As he speaks, more and more men come down from the shelves, until the whole floor is covered with people. I can’t help but smile a little. I have been waiting for this day my entire life, the day I would become a man.
       When we are done, everyone whispers “Mazel Tov” and climbs back up to bed before we are caught. I’m about to do the same, when another prisoner comes up to me. I think he is the prisoner who first said that they’d join us. 
 “We are alive,” he says to me as he puts something in my hand. “We are alive, and that is all that matters. We cannot let them tear us from the pages of the world.” I fingered the object in my hand as he walked away, and crawled back onto the shelf. It’s a small block of wood that vaguely takes the shape of a horse. The wood is dark, but it is also smooth. 
 As I climb back into my shelf, I realize that the prisoner who gave me the horse is right. I am still alive, and I must do what I can to stay that way.

Harry's parents were killed by a vicious person, and so were Yankek's. They both are alone, and have no family.

Text to World- The holocaust reminds me of what is happening in Europe. In Europe back then there was the Holocaust which was not a great time in history. And now there are more problems with Syrian Refugees. She later found out that he was still alive. This reminds me of when Yanek thought that all of his family was dead, but then he found out his cousin and his wife were still alive.


Text-to-world- The Nazis had called the Jews "Traitors to the Fatherland". When he called Germany the Fatherland, it reminded me of how Jewish people refer to Israel as the Motherland. The only difference is the gendering of the country.
