Think of the circulatory system as a delivery service. Then you can think of blood vessels as roads. Blood vessels come in different sizes. Some are large. They are like highways. Others are smaller. They are like residential streets.

The largest blood vessels are called the arteries. Arteries carry blood away from the heart. The blood they carry is rich in oxygen.

Arteries divide into smaller and smaller blood vessels. The smallest blood vessels are called capillaries. The blood in the capillaries is carrying food and oxygen. These materials pass through the thin walls of the capillaries.

From the capillaries, the blood moves into veins. Veins are larger than capillaries but smaller than arteries. They bring blood back to the heart. The blood they carry has lost its food and oxygen. In the heart and lungs the blood gets a new supply of food and oxygen. it also loses the wastes it's carrying.

The pumping of blood pushes the blood against the walls of the blood vessels. This push is called blood pressure. If arteries are blocked with fat, the heart has to pump harder to push the blood through. This is called high-blood pressure. It can be dangerous to your health. Controlling the amount of fat you eat can help your blood pressure. Reading food labels can help you avoid eating too much fat.
