Technology is Taking Over Jobs

by Britney Acosta

Technology has been improving over the years and it is taking over jobs. Today, manufacturing jobs that people could once live on are now considered low-paying service jobs. Employers are now complaining and are angry because many jobs are disappearing. It has been reported a decrease of malls as online shopping makes progress. It is clearly time to go back to the traditional ways and stop technology from taking charge before it creates a jobless future.

There needs to be a change made here. In the next 5 years about 5 million jobs could disappear because of the advances in technology. This would higher the rates of unemployment. Ask yourself, what would happen to all those jobless people ?

Developments in artificial intelligence, robotics, and biotechnology, would disrupt the business world in a similar way to previous industrial revolutions, the World Economic Forum said in a report. With the improvements made in technology and robotics, there is a high chance that jobs will be taken over by this artificial intelligence. According to Ivana Kottasova in her article "Technology could kill 5 million jobs by 2020" posted on CNN on January 18, 2016 she argues that smart robots could soon replace traditional human jobs. She shows this by stating, "It found that as many as 7.1 million jobs in the world's richest countries could be lost through redundancy and automation."

Customer service representatives, truck and taxi drivers will eventually be eliminated due to robots. "By 2021 a disruptive tidal wave will begin. Solutions powered by AI/cognitive technology will displace jobs, with the biggest impact felt in transportation, logistics, customer service and consumer services,” said Forrester’s Brian Hopkins in the report. In the industry for transportation, Uber and Google are now working on driverless cars. This means that within a few years there will be cars that will not need a driver.

By 2021, artificial intelligence will have extinguished 6% of all jobs in the United States. 6% may not seem like a big number, but with all the jobs in the US it really is a huge amount. According to Olivia Solon in her article "Robots will eliminate 6% of all US jobs by 2021" she argues that there won't be enough good paying jobs for all the people in the US. She shows this by stating, “Six percent is huge. In an economy that’s really not creating regular full-time jobs, the ability of people to easily find new employment is going to diminish. So we will have people wanting to work and struggling to find jobs because the same trends are beginning to occur in other historically richer job creation areas like banking, retail and healthcare."

To reverse this catastrophe, we, as a country must invest in transforming the workforce if we want to keep up with the changes in technology and avoid mass unemployment and growing inequality. A good place to start is to invest in education and adult learning programs.

Some will push for protectionism, shielding certain jobs in order to preserve employment levels in the short-term. What society therefore urgently needs is an entirely new value system for both education and work; one centered around the singular thing robots can’t quite catch up with us on:, which is creativity. A recent report by Nesta, a UK-based innovation and research foundation, found that creative jobs will be much more resistant to automation, and 21% of US employment requires people to be highly creative. We need to enable creative thinking in all aspects of business management.

Since artificial intelligence is eventually going to take over millions of jobs, I'm not suggesting that robots shouldn't be eliminated. Robots can be used to our advantage. These robots can be helpful for companies looking to cut costs, but not so good if you’re an employee working in a simple-to-automate field. According to Tom Puthiyamadam in his article called "It's OK If Robots Take Over Our Jobs So Long As This Happens" posted by Fortune states that people are in favor of having robots take over our jobs. He show this when he states, "Robots can now assemble cars, around the clock, without much help from humans. Machines can write stories for news publishers. It’s simply the way it goes — technology does displace workers – but, perhaps more surprising, is that many people don’t object to artificial intelligence (AI) taking our jobs. In some cases, they actually are in favor of it." This should be seen as a positive thing because the more robots can do for us, the less we have to worry about doing more work.

I am not saying that technology and artificial intelligence are horrible for our society because in reality we use technology to help us with everyday things. According to Michael Jones in his article titled "Yes, the robots will steal our jobs. And that's fine." posted by The Washington Post states that robots will take over jobs, but it shouldn't be seen as a negative thing because there are big rates of unemployment over the years and improvement in technology should be seen as an advantage for the US against other countries. He shows this when he states, "But a focus on technology’s substitutionary (or replacement) role fails to appreciate how it also can be complementary. Job loss in some occupations will certainly continue, but it will be accompanied by gains in different fields, just as in the past." Jobs are lost all the time so robots should be the least of our worries.

Since technology and artificial intelligence has been improving more over the years, we should take action. This is causing jobs to be replaced by machines and people don't know how to react. Technology may be helpful in everyday life, but we should not let robots take over our jobs. Being replaced by artificial intelligence should be taken offensive and we should go back to our traditional ways of working hard when technology was not heavily involved.

by Rodger Brewster

As life goes on and new things come and go, the internet seems to become more important than ever before, ultimately putting many people out of work but for the better, people tend to give attitudes, and tend to slack when it comes to working. There is a chance to be taken, when hiring someone to work these days, so having artificial intelligence in the workplace should be invited.

Artificial intelligence is only here to benefit the world as a whole. It is less time consuming, more efficient, and reliable. Many times in the work force, mistakes happen, and the workers are the only ones to blame, that can unfortunately to the worker losing his or her job. Artificial Intelligence, decreases mistakes at work, and makes companies more efficient. So why are people angry?

In the Washington Post article by Michael Jones on Feb 17, 2016, it states that," Humans will still be necessary in the economy of the future, even if we can’t predict what we will be doing." Which means that we are still an essential part of the economy, therefore we will still be apart of it no matter what. Another quote from this source is," Machines are indeed replacing humans – and replicating what we thought were uniquely human skills – at a faster rate than many of us thought possible until recently." This goes to show that companies are improving, and that we should be open-minded to this incredible change.

It is clear to see why we as a people only see the negativity in jobs being taken by AI, we as a country have always felt that no one, or nothing should be taking our jobs. Which is ironic, because most of the people that are complaining, are the same ones that are too lazy to even attempt to get a job. Which brings me to my next source, in a Fortune article by Tom Puthiyamadam on Apr 25, 2017, it states that "The majority of experts expect technology like AI to create more jobs than it displaces by the year 2025, according to Pew, but these jobs may be completely different from roles that exist today." If we take the time to learn about something before assuming the worst about it, we may learn that certain things could definitely benefit us as a people. AI is expected to create more jobs for people, for those that have lost jobs too AI, and then some.

Another thing that we as a people forget to consider is that, not everything new will prosper, things do fail. People are difficult, and humans are complicated, and that is something AI can't deal with. In the same article is states, "What’s most surprising is that executives are willing to trust AI for such important decisions as promotions and salaries: 69% thought an AI platform would be as fair or even more fair as a human in making promotion and salary decisions, but 86% of respondents would still want to talk to a human after a review decision was made by AI, suggesting that people want the intelligence of an AI platform, but paired with the empathy of a human" so human's still need people in the workplace.

We should look forward to AI becoming a bigger part of the workplace, and the reason why I say this, is because it takes more of the load off of us humans. How many times have people complained about their job being too hard, and contemplate about if going to work is even worth it. With AI in the picture, people could possibly go to work later than usual. People could be able to spend more time worrying about their lives, instead of killing their time by killing themselves to make a dollar. I personally know many families that have been broken up because of work taking up too much of their time. this is the time where we as a people can take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy the company of others.

Now some people get the notion that AI is terrible for humans, because of the jobs being eliminated by robots. In a The Guardian article from Olivia Solon on September 13, 2016, states that ,"By 2021, robots will have eliminated 6% of all jobs in the US, starting with customer service representatives and eventually truck and taxi drivers." However I would say that small 6% will not be the ending of humanity, and that the jobs that Olivia stated will be eliminated are customer service representatives and taxi drivers. Which are jobs that can be done by anyone anyway, meaning it is not a special job, so who cares.

Another source that goes against me is a CNN Money article by Ivana Kottasova on Jan 18, 2016 that states,"Insisting on more diverse work forces in terms of gender, ethnicity and age, will also be vital for companies that want to succeed in the rapidly changing world." However , this is actually a good thing, it is about time that work forces become more diverse. It is sad that robots have to teach people that all humans are valuable, and all deserve a chance to prove themselves.

AI is not the end of anything, to be honest it is only the beginning. I feel that AI can better the human race, that can ultimately make us all better people at heart. It will give people a chance to enjoy life, without having to miss out on their kids grow, because they have more time. AI will not take over the world, it is just becoming a bigger part of our everyday life, and just like the beginning of time, we will adapt to it, and make the best out of it. So please, stop hating on technology, and learn appreciate it.

by Rodger Brewster

This cartoon states that robots are taking over in the workplace, but the humans are not liking this change at all. They are giving AI the benefit of the doubt, and are looking to see what is so special about these robots (reason why the humans are creeping on the robot). If we take a good look at this picture we can see the big difference between robots and humans in the workplace. Humans are taking the time to worry about what the robot is doing, rather than doing their own work, but the robot is doing the only thing it is programmed to do, work. This cartoon supports the Con side, which is that robots are taking over in the workplace, but it is for the better.

by Britney Acosta

The following cartoon makes the argument that artificial intelligence is taking over people's jobs. Since technology and the developments in artificial intelligence have been improving, it has been reported that it is going to affect jobs. Employers are going to be replaced with this artificial intelligence because it is cheaper and faster to do work. This supports the pro argument that technology is taking over jobs because in the next 5 years about 5 million jobs are going to disappear because of this improved technology. The irony in this cartoon is that the jobless man is complaining that he lost his job to artificial intelligence, but the thing he is talking to is a robot that is a bar tender. It has been reported that AI/cognitive technology has improved and will soon be making driverless cars, for example with Uber. This would impact thousands of taxi and truck drivers. This will higher the rates of unemployment. As the article mentions that artificial intelligence will have extinguished 6% of all jobs in the United States.
