I believe the theme of this story is to be polite, kind and grateful to others. This is shown through Nyasha who grew up being a very gentle and good natured person, unlike her sister Manyara who was cunning and cruel and always told Nyasha that one day she'd be queen and Nyasha would be her servant, and Nyasha would say that she would gladly do so. One day a King from a neighboring city sent a message to the two girls' father which stated: "The most Worthy and Beautiful Daughters in the Land are invited to appear before the king,
and he will choose one to become queen!". The father told his daughters of the message and that they'd set out the next morning for the palace. Manyara being greedy would sneak out in the night with a pouch of food en route to the king's palace, along the path Manyara encountered a hungry boy which she rudely shoved aside and an old woman who tried to give her advice which she ignored. Nyasha did the exact opposite as she went along the path the next day when going to the palace, giving the boy and the old woman, fruits from her food basket. upon arriving at the palace she found her sister who said the king was a snake who had scared her, but Nyasha believed that she had not come this far for nothing and entered the castle, only to find a small snake she had befriended in her garden. Which then transformed into the king whom told her he was also the hungry boy and the old woman ( a shapeshifter) and asked her to marry him, to which she agreed and she lived happily ever after with her sister Manyara as a servant.

For example, Yeh-Shen was a kind, bright girl who was goodhearted and lonely. Yeh-Shen had many good traits that enraged her stepmother. She was jealous that Yeh-Shen was better than her own daughter and decided to unleash her fury on poor Yeh-Shen. Because of this, Yeh-Shen finally received her good karma and was freed by the cruelty of both her step mother and step sister while her stepmother and step sister are punished and died  a horrible death in the end.

3. the Native American version of Cinderella is similar to the ones I already knew because both of the "Cinderellas" of the story are rewarded for their kindness, honesty, and bravery.  The stories are also similar through the characters, both have stepsister like figures and a a missing maternal figure in their lives.

4. The Chinese version of the Cinderella story also has some differences between the original version (I know very well) as well. To begin with, Yeh-Shen's "fairy godmother" are remains of fish bones that she collected after her stepmother decided to punish Yeh-Shen for keeping a secret from her. Her stepmother had cooked her only friend, which was the fish. While Cinderella's "fairy godmother" was a magical tree that grew on her mother's grave. Both are different interpretations of the "fairy godmother." Also, Yeh-Shen wanted to go to a festival, but this festival was more of a place for young people to find a lover and get married. Cinderella also goes to a festival, but this festival was more for who was going to marry the prince. In addition,  when Yeh-Shen goes to the festival, her stepsister (technically her half-sister) still recognizes her a bit. She even tells her mother that the beautiful girl kind of resembled Yeh-Shen. At this point, Yeh-Shen quickly leaves the festival, not wanting to get caught. When Cinderella goes to the festival, her stepmother and stepsisters did not recognize her in her beautiful clothing. Instead, they believed that she was somewhere foreign and did not resemble Cinderella at all. Cinderella only leaves in the evening after dancing with the prince. Another thing is that Yeh-Shen's stepmother and stepsister are punished by the king (Yeh-Shen's husband) and are forced to stay in an isolated cave, where they meet their doom and get crushed by rocks. Meanwhile, Cinderella's stepsisters are punished by two doves and have eternal blindness for what they have done to poor Cinderella.  There are of course many other differences between the original story (I know very well) and the Chinese version of this story.

5. I prefer the Chinese version because it's both similar, but also very different from the Cinderella story that I've known for years. I love how Yeh-Shen wants to find her missing slipper to bring back her old friend and is unaware that the king placed the shoe where it was founded as a trap to find the maiden who had left the small, beautiful shoe. Her grief and love for her friend was much greater than love itself and overall the story was more about how she wanted to bring back her friend and got the bonus of getting married to the king and earning her freedom from her family.
