In the book, Elie goes through a lot of pain and suffering and does end up sometimes questioning why god is doing what he is doing, In this quote though it still shows that he has hope for his life and his purpose. In the camps, a lot of people go through so much torturing that they forget what is normal.

In the book, Elie's father dies while in the camp, He is starved to death and also worked like crazy, During all this, Elie keeps asking god why he is doing this and why he is letting bad things continue to happen. He does stay loyal and hopeful to a degree. There was a part in the book where he thought about eating his dads portion of soup. He almost did before realizing its a bad thing to do. In the end he did come back to his senses and continue to follow god and this just made him stronger.

This quote is more focused on the German soldiers then anyone else. Since they have been working with the Nazi regime for some time now, have they just completely forgotten what was right and what was wrong, Did there Morales just go away? Or did they just stop caring when there life got threatened by the older officers? At what point did these officers realize they are doing something wrong or did something wrong? I personally think these people were born bad and never had the interest of doing something good with there life.

In this quote he mentioned god and if he will give him strength to ask questions, he was confused about the stories of the jews being taken away and he wanted to know why they were being taken. Elie at this point was still normal because he had not been in the camp yet. the moment he stepped into the camp, people like this were completely throwing there Morales out the window and started to lose hope in god and die from being worked.

Quote: We received no bread, we lived on snow, it took the place of bread.

In this quote it talks about how the Germans cut out the bread supply during the winter, instead they were given snow to try to live off of, every once and a while the soldiers would throw a piece of stale bread at them and people would kill each other over a little piece of bread. These soldiers either did it because they enjoyed it or because they were ordered to do it. Either way its inhumane to watch people who are starving and weak fight to the death over a piece of bread and this goes with my theme because these people were just trying to stay alive by eating food.

What is our responsibility to act against injustice?

My response: I believe that when ever there is injustice, then people need to step in and find a way to stop people from being hurt or killed. It's not really a self responsibility but more of a world responsibility and nationwide responsibility. In world war 2 many people were being tortured to death and no one did anything until the war was over. Why wait to help someone when there in need of help? Too many people died that did not have to and it's all because we waited for the end of the war.
